I have “by folder” on RasPlex using the Night skin. Haven’t checked the Plex skin. My TV Shows section needs to use this mode as I do not use a scanner for these odd shows. I select the TV Shows library and then click the menu “context menu” and I get a filter option. One of them is By Folder.
Voila
What version of the "Night" skin is this, and which of its ViewMode settings is active for this to work with a normal "TV Shows" section ?I have "by folder" on RasPlex using the Night skin. Voila
I use Night v1.8rc2 myself (aware of no newer release), and it does not give me a "By folder" choice in any filter menu I can find, except for a media section of the "Home Movies" kind.

I am running 1.8 rc2
The TV Shows library is set up as: -

The Home screen
TV Show Section
Files within the BBC America Folder placed there by my NPVR server
Menu
Rasplex isn’t the same from the one we are using on computer. It is like another distribution as I learn here on this forum. Rasplex is a fork That is why we don’t see the same options.
So problem remain for us, poor using of the computer version
It is the same skin I also use on a Mac mini with PHT. You can’t tell the difference in use visually.
I could take exactly the same screen shots on my main system running PHT with Night skin on the MM
Edit.
Maybe I see this option as I split my TV stuff into “TV Series” which is organized as normal by Series/Season/Episode using the standard scanner, and another library for TV Shows that are random stuff such as the news or nightly business reports. I only need “By Folder” for the TV Shows and not the TV Series library.

That's definitely the reason. As I stated in an earlier post, the 'By folder' listing mode is supported only for 'home movie' types of media sections, meaning that they contain separate video file entries (without season/episode levels), for which NO metadata is scanned online.
For that kind of section only, the "By folder" mode is supported in the original 'Plex' skin as well.
And since someone mentioned differencies with RasPlex, I should add that this feature is identical in RasPlex too.
RasPlex 0.5.1 is in fact up-to-date with PHT 1.3.6, with the only differencies from a PC version being those enforced by differing hardware and the underlying OpenELEC operating system.

I really don't understand why this "by folder" is not implemented (for movies & series). Metadata can be retrieved is no problem. Xvmc does this and most hardware Mediaplayers do it.
To me it is the most basic form of an efficient organization since it enables the user to decide what is where and when shown and not relying on IMDB categories which are not always similar to ones own choice.

Listen to what @dlanor is saying, Rasplex is not Kodi (or as you say, incorrectly, 'Xvmc'), nor is it any other 'hardware Mediaplayer'.
If you want folders move to OpenELEC and stop stating the obvious!

Guys... question remain the same, we just want a feature to be able to see the folder for all kind of videos, not only for "home movie" types.
That's it, that's all. They had it before, and they removed it, we want it back. I think @tonvh and me agree on it, and many others !
Do we need to make a survey to have it back or some feature request?

View by folder has never been a 'feature' in any version of Rasplex.
The source code is on Github, if you would like to add the code to enable view by folder then feel free and submit it for inclusion, that's the beauty of Open Source.

Of course it could be done by the PHT application too. But only if the coders of the main PHT project at Plex Inc want to implement it, which they so far haven't...
That's something the RasPlex coders have no influence over. The RasPlex project just ports an existing PHT implementation for the RPi1 or RPi2.

I agree that it would be useful to have it, but a request of that nature needs to be aimed at the people responsible for such developments, meaning the Plex Inc team members working on PHT.

This thread seems to have gone sideways with "By Folders" functionality is just not there. Well it depends on exactly what functionality you need. As Winddiesel did to at least make it better than it is for him. I think for many, the By Folder option is buried and not obvious, hence most think it is not possible at all. It is, however you loose some functionality.
I also want to state that this is NOT a RasPlex issue, this is a PHT issue on which RasPlex is based. I am a huge supporter and have donated to the support of RasPlex from its wobbly beginnings to what is possible now with a $35 Pi.
Perhaps this topic should be moved to a more general PHT forum?
What is not clear to me is what are the actual requirements of the "By Folder" requesters.
If you want all the Meta Data then yes, you need the scanners and the library section set appropriately. This of course is the power and ease of use that is Plex. It does of course come with the "What you see is what you get"
If I could add artwork to the higher level folders (or just use a folder.jpg) as the default, that would at least make By Folder navigation look nice. (This is how Tivix worked for those that used that system, but that was very manual)
For those wanting to order by Folder, what are they looking for? If you just want the Cover Art for a movie and it grouped more logically, they sure it can be done, but will not have all the bells and whistles.
You can create a "Home Movies" library and in that have folders
Comedies/
Sci-Fi/
Drama/
Action/
Fantasy/
/Lord of the Rings
/ Harry Potter
If you put each movie in its own folder it will not look very nice, you could however put the Movie file and a jpg with the same name in the group folder and at least get the Cover Art. i.e "Cars (2006).mkv" and "Cars (2006).jpg"
You will get the Media Info, but none of the other Meta Data that is scraped from the online DB's.
Not ideal maybe, but a trade off between all teh Meta Data and being able to quickly navigate a large movie collection.
As the libraries grow, the flat nature makes it harder to navigate, unless you keep switching the filters, which for average users (wife and kids), is just not so easy.
I would really like to collapse all the collections under a single title in the main view. Batman, LOTR, Harry Potter etc. Sure I can switch to collections, then I only see them or have collections of one if I want to see all the other one off movies.
As these libraries get larger and more features like User Switching is added, the need for a more hierarchical view will grow.
My music collection is many times larger than my movies and I use a different front end for better navigation which is much faster to find any song or album I wish, based on name, genre, the user, etc. All of which is build using a view scheme tree based on tags from the DB, view filters, Grouping and View layouts. The actual file structure is only a couple of levels. This of course makes it more flexible, but also harder for the average person to configure. That of course is the beauty of Plex, It looks good out the box.
My basic music navigation structure is below, which is the admin view and not what the user sees which includes artwork to keep it looking nice.

As Plex evolves the support for Photos and Music, I can see custom navigation becoming an increasingly vocal request as Movie collections tend to be much smaller that many music or photo collections I'm aware of.

I am new to rasplex (and plex) so sorry if I am in wrong thread. What I need is the libraries to function like I see on other clients. For example I have a ‘TV Library’. On all my official plex clients (web, windows, etc) I see TV series by folder - I.E. I see an object for each TV series with metadata. On rasplex I just see ‘recently attended’ and don’t seem to be able to find way to browse by season either with or without metadat. I have no idea if this is the same as ‘by folder’ but I couldn’t see any option in UI to show this library that way. I need rasplex to function in same way as official clients. I am unclear if this is a workitem for rasplex or the underlying PHT?

The answer you are looking for is different to what the others are asking for.
The solution for you is to navigate to TV Library and then press enter/ok and you will have your main TV shows, navigate to a show and press enter/ok and you will see the Seasons, navigate to the Season you are looking for and press enter/ok and you will see the episodes. Same for any Library.

Thanks! Perfect, I never saw that menu stage because of double press issue.
