How well does Plex work with an external hard drive

Just thought I'd add this, before I went for this was searching like mad for what works so this may help somebody

Virgin Superhub 1

very old Pentium 4 PC, 1gb ram was running 4 seperate IDE drives total capacity 360gb. I leave this running it only runs PMS, I access it remotely if needed via my laptop

Dumped 3 of the ide drives and brought an ASUS RT-AC68U Wireless Router - AC1900, Dual Band  and set my superhub to modem mode.

Plugged into the ASUS now is a 2TB USB 3.0  Western Digital Elements external hard drive. I've set this as a mapped drive on the PC..

In the hard drive I've made folders for music, video etc...Plex finds them no problem.

I view content wirelessly via my LG42" smart TV and Simon's Plex APP, can view on a £35 android tablet using the app. And my Android phone

plus my laptop via the Plex home theatre. no problems with any of it.

I have noticed a problem.    I have my library off my plex server (Linux) running on an over IP disc storage array and if that array goes offline (usually more than just a few minutes), Plex does a library update and doesn't find the media so it purges all the data and rescans once the IP-Storage becomes available again..  messing up all the "recently added" data and forcing a full deep scan.   Any way around this?   I know the simply answer is probably don't take my IP storage device offline :)   or  Don't do auto library updates..  but I need to..   I can slow them down but this issue can still happen.

Is there a setting in Plex to not remove meta data or even shows automatically?   I wouldn't mind doing a manual weekly purge of actual removed shows or something.

Thanks,

Ron

I have experienced the issues raised by others; not being able to add a folder that is sat on an external USB drive.

However, what many of you may have already done, is share the folder, as in "right click the folder and select 'share with...'" this way you get a full network path rather than a lettered drive [\\computername\mediafolder] instead of [J:\mediafolder] then use the network path when adding the library location.

It may be set up dependant for other users, but it worked for me.

Hope this helps others.

So I just made my external HD shared, but it still doesnt come up as an option when making adding a library or editing a current one.

Well the very first thing that nobody seemed to notice is he is running windows xp and on the requirements page it says windows 7 or higher. I have 13tb of external storage all USB and with my crappy new computer it runs Plex like a dream with 6 connections. Haven’t tried more connections but for a celeron processor and only 4 gigs of ram, I’d say it runs pretty damn nice. Love Plex. Been here for a few years and after a couple months of asking questions in the forums, I am pretty much independent. Ask in the right forum and you will get your answers.

From reading some of the complaints here, I think the problem is people not understanding how plex works.

When you add a library to plex, you have to tell it a folder to search in – If you setup a library to search in C:\MyMovies for example, it’ll ONLY see files in that folder.
When you plug in a USB drive, it comes up as a new drive letter, lets say E:.
You have to then go into the library settings and add the new folder.

Nope. It was in the “Suggested Topics” at the bottom. And instead of berating someone for necroing a post that the forum software itself suggested, how about a “hey thanks for clarifying that so maybe if someone searches for this and has the same issue/question, theyll have an answer instead of 6 years of confused people unable to figure out how to add folders to a library”?

Yeah, popped up on google when I thought of an idea to partition a hard drive to see if it runs faster due to smaller partition sizes as opposed to thumbing through 4tb, with 4 partitions, it would only look through 1tb. So, since it was the first post that popped up on google, I went ahead and read the whole thread. And yes, I looked at the date.
