Hi Guys, we have a windows based i7 HP mini PC, displayport/hdmi output to theatre amp. It’s been working flawlessly and passes through DTS-HDMA and other formats in 4K without any issues for a while now. All Direct Play / Direct Stream enabled, no transcoding.
Fantastic.
Since doing so, any 4KHDR movies appears to be really jittery and slow. If i force i to transcode, issue goes away but of course quality is a bit lower and it drops to a PCM stream (and simply not desirable).
If I go into the Video Quality settings and drop quality to LOW, it returns to normal - but visually the quality is less. Toggled with various other settings, hardware decode on/off and so forth but not much changes it.
No issues playing in VLC and other players.
If if go back to version 1.3.1, the issue disappears.
A bit lost. For now we’re back on 1.3.1 without issue.
Moving from Version 1.3.1 to the latest 1.51 is a very huge upgrade. How old is version 1.3.1??
A good start would be to completely remove the old 1.3.1. That involves uninstalling and then removing the app data folder (C:\Users\xxxxx\AppData\Local\Plex HTPC) manually.
After that install the latest version. Reconfigure Plex HTPC as needed. Try again.
If the playback is still slow, please tell us what settings you have made.
What GPU do you have? If you are using the iGPU it’s likely overwhelmed. (So have a look at the task manager and the GPU utilization) Nvidia GPUs may need to be set to max power mode to achieve perfect playback. In any case, your HTPC logs might be useful.
Thanks Mitzsch, yeah it had been on a version for a while as when I went to 1.4.1 back when that came out, this exact issue happened … and I shelved it. Then eventually bit the bullet with 1.5.1 (presume this is most recent).
Once we moved higher version we notice the “quality” settings exist, and I’ve since set quality to normal with hardware acceleration turned on (previously couldn’t use this as created new issues but seems resolved in later version. Also think I disabled refresh rate switching and it seems to behave now. THing is, I always used refresh rate switching to match the different fps for different content otherwise that introduced its own problems.
The odd thing is that in previous versions on exact same hardware no such issues existed, and the quality was very high without any glitching. (and same blurays played in VLC etc no issue).
Thanks I will try the full eradication of the app and the appdata folders you mentioned … if that doesn’t yield a result, I’ll come back with additional information around the GPU and some deeper fact-finding and fresh symptoms report.
I experienced my first ever playback issue with a 4K HDR blu ray remux tonight. I initially thought the disk I ripped from had an issue as it would skip/become jittery in the same places every time, but switching to the Android TV app the issues didn’t exist there.
I was able to fix the issue on the Plex HTPC app by enabling “hardware decoding” but I’ve never had to do that before with any 4K hdr files. Not sure what’s changing with the recent updates but something seems off.
