HTPC on Linux - Dolby and other Audio

Server Version#: latest
Player Version#:latest

Having issues with HTPC on Windows… so changed over to Ubuntu Linux. Issues with HTPC cleared…

EXCEPT… No Dolby. On Windows, all of the various audios such as Dolby, Dolby+ , DTS, and all other variations I am aware of pass though to my AV Receiver to decode.

It appears that Linux only passe PCM…

Maybe not directly an HTPC issue… but is there a solution?

Half the time I see something like this, it is a lie. I’ll assume the same here.

You likely didn’t set the audio device nor any of the audio settings.

Interesting comment from a Plex employee to a Customer. My response is that only a fool would insult a client.

PMS verrsion is 1.31.0.6654 running on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS
HTPC client is 1.33.1 on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS

I am familiar with Ubuntu Linux from a server standpont as 2 of my servers are that.

I am not familiar with it as a desktop OS (very familiar with Windows)

the Whole point of my message was to ask for help on that. I was not expecting to be called a Liar.

Is it possible to pass though Dolby, DTS, TruHD, etc though to my AV receiver from Linux? It is not clear from what I have been able to find anything concrete on google.

Sigh. You first commented 20 hours ago and yet this version was not published until 7 hours ago. So what version were you running then?

Yes. This is why I said:

So, go into the audio settings and configure it to match your setup.

Since it was just dowloaded from the snap, about 48 hours ago, i am assuming it was the version before that. So… latest

So aparently when i ran apt upgrade yesterday it updated it.

As to setting, under audio i have the device gk208 hdmi/dp audio controler which i beleve is correct for my gtx710 video card.

I then have 5.1 set for audio

Then i have all of the audio chekcboxes checked (dd, dd+, dts, etc)

  1. Movie starts paused. I have to give it a tap on the slider to start.
  2. Only plays in pcm, regardless of what the movies audio is

When you don’t answer the questions asked, it does make people less likely to want to help you. Saying latest doesn’t actually answer the question because it leaves ambiguity as to whether it correct, did you even bother to check if it was the latest, when did you check, etc.

That aside, since I know your version number now (which is no longer the latest), this is going to require logs to diagnose further unless the below resolves it.

Unfortunately this is a situation where Linux isn’t so great. You likely have half a dozen or more devices of which most don’t work. With passthrough, I have had better luck with the ALSA device on HDMI (or DP in your case). I’ve often used the first one but that’s on Intel GPUs so yours could be different.

This is not normal. Perhaps a result of failing to passthrough? What is the slider you are referencing?

I wont bicker after this… It was just installed. Based on the timeline you stated for 1.33.1 release, then I was in fact as I said running the latest. When I say latest, it means I have run the current updates (plexupdate.sh, or apt upgrade. I did not appreciate being called a liar.

Also, I am running 1.33.1, as when I replied, I had run apt upgrade. the number I replied with was from snap info

the slider I refer to s when you press down arrow when playing a movie, and you get the controls. this is the slider bar that show the current position of the movie, and that you can slide to change position in the movie

As to logs, I see an article on how to get them… I assume I should duplicate the problem, and then grab the logs and send them? to this email?

Just to let you know. I am no longer pursuing this. I gave the PC way to family member that needed it, and will get a Nvidia Shield. I have already had an opportunity to test one, and I know it works. and it costs less than getting a 4K card for the PC
