Under the AppData/Plex Media Server/Media/localhost directory there are a lot of folders that are 1.5GB each. The entire localhost folder is 20GB in size and it looks like the majority of it is index files. I’ve turned off “Generate intro video markers” and “Generate chapter thumbnails” but I’m not sure if that will delete the data.
Can I safely delete the data in the localhost folder? It’s sitting on my SSD and I’d like to get that 20GB back.
If you want to free up some space you should let Plex handle its own files.
The biggest impact is probably to disable Generate chapter thumbnails (see Settings > [Server Name] > Library) or to move some temporary folders off that drive (e.g. by setting Transcoder temporary directory in Settings > [Server Name] > Transcoder).
It’s possible to move the entire data folder off your system drive – however keep in mind that every file that’s not accessible because Plex first needs to spin up an external or network drive will slow down your Plex Media Server!
That only affects new content. It does not remove them for old content. Also, the information kept for these is relatively small. The big thing would be the video preview thumbnails. You can get rid of those by editing each library.
