When watching movies my subtitles are HUUUUGE when in italic. Normal fonts display fine. The problem is consistent throughout all movies I have - but the size is not. Meaning that whenever a subtitle is in italic it will sometimes be twice as big as normal subtitles… other times only 3-4 letter can fit on the entire screen.
The problem is there whether I stream the movie on AppleTV or my Windows Desktop player.
Pretty much all my movies are bought through iTunes and downloaded to my Synology NAS from where I run the Plex Server. Watching the same movies in iTunes has no problems with subtitles.
How? Why? WTF?!?
This is not a new problem… it has always been this way for me.
Is there anything that can be done here?
The problem is there’s an odd formatting of the subs that throws the player into a tailspin - and there is no way to set the player to IGNORE embedded formatting. Unfortunately.
The only way I’ve found to remedy the issue is to take the subs into an editor and remove the formatting. Manually. One at a time. Yep. Painful.
Their player handles the formatting they put in their material.
Plex mis-handles it and can’t be made to ignore the formatting (a pretty serious shortcoming I eluded to previously in talks with the developer - and now here it’s come up again… go figure - @deactivated ) <—everybody give the ‘eye’ to Matt when he gets here…lol

Before it was just me and that crazy Handbrake ASS formatting, now it’s every ITunes download… That’s different.
Save the file, and problem solved in a few seconds.
It will remove all of the formatting, so if the italics are important to you, this won’t work. A lot of the Plex players ignore that extra formatting anyways, so I don’t worry about it.
Oh yea, man SE is the berries for fixing it, but when you ASSed up about 300 TV Show Episodes before you noticed it - it’s still painful…
I do check that now during the initial ‘orientation’ meeting with my media to head off any problems. SE rocks, but as illustrated in this thread - not all users will be as ‘dedicated’ to ‘the art’ as some (the few, the proud, the wackjobs). Will they, Matt?
I just tried Subtitle Edit and I can load up the .mp4 file with embedded subtitles. I can also remove the formatting but SE wants to save the edited subtitles to a separate file. Yes I can then link that file in Plex… but I’d much much rather not have a separate subtitle file.
Well, ‘The Wackjobs’ mux that ‘fixed’ sub back in with Xmedia Recode and a tru WackJob might even add it as a second sub track so the first one can be all pretty on your Iplayer - or whatever.

Not too sure about the success rate when having multiple sub tracks in an MP4.
A test is in order, I suppose.
I also experience this. It is clearly a bug in Plex player and not something that should be “fixed” by removing italic from subtitles. VLC plays same media just fine.
