HW transcoding is at 18-20 and then down to below 1 and causes buffering

Server Version#: 4.104.2

Hey all,

So this isn’t the first time this has happened but I managed to grab a screenshot of it.

I have an intel NUC 11 (12th gen CPU… Intel Tigerlake). Currently on a work trip and I’m watching remotely from the plex app on my phone.

I’m running ubuntu and utilizing quicksync. Running plex in docker and I have passed

devices:
  - /dev/dri:/dev/dri

I was just watching another movie that’s 4k and I’m transcoding to 720p. My transcode speed was crushing and no buffering at all (I have my transcode buffer set to 10 mins).

However, I just started a show and the transcode stalled & so did the stream. Still said hardware but speed was 0.2. Image here

Last time this happened I had to restart my docker container. However this time I just waited a few minutes and it shot back up. Image here

Not of big concern to me, but I would like to get this figured out as my less technical family and friends might just stop moving my plex if it does this often.

Any ideas?

It happened again once the next episode started and I happened to grab a screenshot of the iGPU and CPU utilization. I can’t for the life of me figure out why the transcode is stalling and it’s not even attempting to use the iGPU or CPU.

Restarted the stream this time and it shot back up. screenshot
