HW Transcoding with AMD Ryzen

I’m planning on building a new PMS. My plan is to use a AMD Ryzen 7 Proc, and a GPU like the 980ti. However I can’t seem to find a good answer if I can use a AMD Ryzen 7 proc, and will the HW transcoding work with a GPU like the 980ti. Everything, even plex support article stated Intel and Intel quick sync. Does anyone have a AMD PMS server with HW transcoding enabled on a dedicated graphics card? If so can you send me your specs so I can build accordingly. Thanks.

I have the same question. I’m looking at building a new server with a Ryzen 7 and a 770 for the GPU and am wondering if the hardware acceleration will work on this.

Although not officially stated, my Gtx 1050 / RX550 / graphic in APU, all supports hardware transcoding for me along with my AMD and Intel CPUs. It’s more of the GPU that matters. newer GPU will have better support for transcoding.

I have a AMD Ryzen 5 2400G APU along with a RX480 GPU.
Currently, I have my system set up with my APU as the (BIOS/EUFI) default display. Plex works fine decoding and transcoding using the which ever of the two GPUs are set as the system default at bootup.

Hey smilence_yu, I was wondering what your setup was. I have an AMD Opteron 8 Core + an RX 550, but for some reason, my Plex only decodes media with the RX 550. My server refuses to encode with the GPU.

If you look at the hardware acceleration wiki you will find out that hardware encoding for AMD is only supported in windows.

My server is running on Windows 10 with the newest AMD drivers and Windows Updates. I’m stumped. I honestly have no clue what’s wrong.

you will need a minimum of nvidia 1050 if you want to support 4k/hdr transcoding.

also be advised that geforce cards are limited to 2 transcode at the same time.

if you expect more than 2 streaming transcodes, you may want to research the quadro p2000, which doesn’t have any transcode limits.

hmm do you have the hardware transcoding checked in PleX? AMD gpus actually support more than two streams but does have less compatibility. Another way to find out is to use some other softwares support VCE and test if they works with your GPU

Yep, I have the hardware transcoding box checked in Plex. It does decode using the hardware because I see the little (hw) text after the source. The encoding doesn’t show (hw) however. I believe it works because I used AMD Relive to record my desktop with h264 encoding to check if it works.

I use A’s Video Converter to transcode all my movies and TV series using both my Rx460 and APU with Vega 8.

[bluesky23.yukishigure.com/en/index.html](A Video Converter - english)

Transcoded results are super clear using A’s, but for decent/pleasing results streaming with Plex Media Server requires approx. 4MBs bandwidth,. Anything less really looks like garbage.

On which OS are you running?

My computers are running Windows 10 x64 (one of them is hacked with Windows Media Center)

Yeah don’t use the 980 as it does not support all formats (think h264 1080p but not H265 4k) if 4K is your jam best getting a 10 series card but your going to be restricted to 2 streams. There is a patch for windows but don’t have anything which is step by step instructructions. Byte my bits doesnt does a video for ubuntu that unlocks the video card but not everyone wants ubuntu.

Your gpu is the RX 550 by the way… maybe check your settings dude as you may be getting confused…I got slugged recently buying the wrong GPU because I didn’t read things properly.

Could you please elaborate as to how your using the video program and the gpu? ( I’m a noob, if you haven’t guessed) just some clear steps and/or instructions on how you use your step up?

I’m using A’s Video Converter to convert my blurays into a digital format for playback on my PC and devices – smaller file sizes, cropping pillars and black bars so they better fit the screen on my phone, etc.

In general, a 1080p movie till take about 25 minutes to transcode into h264 and about 45 minutes to transcode into h265 (Peak VBR, w/Pre-Analysis and VBAQ Enabled AND BEST QUALITY (vs. Fast and Balanced.))

In some cases, I use the software to bring my 4k rips down to 1080p resolutions better for streaming – ie. not forcing Plex to transcode on the fly.

Is this what you were wanting to know?

Ok I get it, your using A’s program like someone who would use handbrake. If i’m understanding you correctly your not transcoding (watching it at the same time)on the fly, your converting the files so you can direct play over the network. Am I right? Well thanks for your reply and the info, good to see how other people do things.

Correct, I am using A’s like people use Handbrake – mostly for when I rip my disc’s. The only time I make “streaming versions” for specific device types is when I rip 4k videos into h265. For those I always make a 1080p h264 version from the original disc for Plex streaming purposes.

Ok thanks yeah I’m using handbrake at the moment the same way for direct play. Only issue I’m having with handbrake is that it won’t rip the Dolby Digital or the DTS tracks, only stereo track. Don’t know if I have the right settings, don’t mess the settings much from default.
