I cannot change the movie name.

I go to the movie icon in the server and click on the pencil. Make changes but the namw will revert back to what PLEX wants it to be which is wrong and hard to understand. FYI this is a folder with all the episodes of “Band of Brothers”

I have noticed that behavior before. It has been improved in recent versions but it still, from time to time, will not save the change unless, after you edit the field, you press “enter.” sometimes it works by just clicking on another field in the dialog but the only pretty sure way I have found is by pressing “enter” to exit the field before proceeding on to other tasks.

This is probably due to that Band of Brothers is a TV Show, not a movie.

/TV Shows
/Band of Brothers
/Season 01
Band of Brothers - s01e01 - Title of Episode Optional.ext
Band of Brothers - s01e02 - Title of Episode Optional.ext

Regardless you should be able to change the name by using the editing dialog. Naming of a video or audio file makes no difference if you want to manually change the name.

BTW: Also just because the OP said “Movie” does not mean it is in a movie library nor does anything the OP said tell us anything about the naming or structure involved. The question, at this point, was only about changing the name that Plex gave the video and that should not be a problem regardless of video type or original name or structure.

If I want to change the name of “The Brady Bunch” to “A Bunch of Cat Porn” I can and should be able to do it even though it would anger both the fans of the series and the consumers of cat porn. Plex really does not care.

Is it an MP4/M4V file?

MP4s with embedded Title Fields can really mess up your day unless you drag Local Media Assets to the bottom of every Agent list in Shows and Movies - all tabs:
Plexweb/Settings/Server/Agents

This sounds more like a glitch.
Try:

First figure out if you want this Movie as a TV Show (that would be good, since that’s what it is). Name and Structure accordingly, but I would do it while it’s out of the library and after you’ve deleted it’s bundle with…:

The Plex Dance®:

  1. remove show/movie from library
  2. update library
  3. empty trash
  4. clean bundles
https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200392106-Library-Actions <— update library, empty trash, clean bundles
  5. bring names and structures into compliance/ or the ultimate bundle reboot operation
  6. replace corrected show/movie into library
  7. update library

All Steps. In Order. No Shortcuts.

If you still have issues after that:

Drag zip file to message window and drop it.

True…fair enough

This works. Quickest, cleanest way to fix a edit issue, without going caveman on your server.

I did the same and it worked temporarily until I manually did a “Refresh All Metadata” and it wipes it out and back to the original title.

So doesn’t anyone have a fix for this?

Go to

  • Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheTVDB

In there, grab the line ‘Local Media Assets’ with your mouse and drag it downwards, so it ends up being at the bottom of the stack of active agents.
Repeat the same under

  • Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheMovieDatabase
  • Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - Plex Movie
  • Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - TheMovieDatabase

Afterwards repeat the ‘Refresh Metadata’ on the affected movie.
