Plex won't change / adjust Title or Sort Title

Server Version#: 4.22.3
Player Version#: NA

Hello everyone,

Firstly I would like to thank all for any help given on this subject! So I am currently having a problem with movies and tv shows not naming correctly or nicely. In the past whenever I added a movies or tv show to my correctly organized plex folder. It use to name/rename itself accordingly. Now for some reason it does not anymore. For some reason it keeps the original download title. It doesn’t even display the name i renamed it to. Here is a example of my situation:

I download tv show named: MacGyver.2016.S04E08.HDTV.x264-SVA
I rename the file myself to: MacGyver - 2016 - S04E08
I then put the file in my plex folder for tv shows

Now randomly. completely randomly. plex will put up the video and name it correctly. Other times it will load it with this title:

MacGyver.2016.S04E08.HDTV.x264-SVA
*an again. That is even after I rename the file myself before putting it in the plex folder.

I have tried all the options in plex to get plex to rename on its own. With no success. I tried
Analyze, Fix Match, UnMatch, and Refresh Metadata.

Any thoughts on why this is randomly happening? I am thinking it is a permission thing, but no way to know how to find out. An at the same time. I haven’t changed anything from when it use to work perfectly. Well I haven’t changed anything that I am aware of.

Thanks again everyone for any help provided!!!

First you need to name that file correctly - MacGyver (2016) - S04E08.ext

But even if you do that you will gain little if your structure is not correct. Use the following. It works for me.

TV Shows ← The TV library points here
_______ShowName (year)
____________Season 01
__________________ShowName (year) - s01e01 - Optional Name.ext
__________________ShowName (year) - s01e02 - Optional Name.ext
__________________and so on for the shows in season 01
____________Season 02 ← just like Season 01
____________Season 03 ← and so on for each season
____________Season 00 ← or “Specials”
__________________ShowName (year) - s00e01 - Optional name
__________________ShowName (year) - s00e02 - Optional name
__________________and so on for each special

Note 1: the eXX part of the specials must match EXACTLY what is found in TheTVDB
Note 2: The (year) may be omitted for shows that do not have more than one occurrence throughout the years.

There are many other structures and naming systems that work but this is the one I use and it just works.

For a mass rename I use FileBot with this format string {n.replaceTrailingBrackets()} - {s00e00.lower()} - {t}

I do not really much care what others do but it is best not to fight the great Plexisauraus.

Truer words have never been written.

Plex media naming & structure requirements (which align exactly with @Elijah_Baley’s post):
https://support.plex.tv/articles/categories/your-media/

Just as of recent plex isnt matching and renaming as for me… when i go to fix match its always the first choice its just not automatic I have to manually do it now. Noticed it today

What the OP describes does also sound a lot like embedded ‘title’ tags messing things up.

Go to

  • Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheTVDB

In there, grab the line ‘Local Media Assets’ with your mouse and drag it downwards, so it ends up being at the bottom of the stack of active agents.
Repeat the same under

  • Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheMovieDatabase
  • Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - Plex Movie
  • Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - TheMovieDatabase

Then Refresh Metadata on the affected movies and tv shows.

Hello Elijah. Thanks for this. I have built my folders and videos files based off Plexs instructions. What’s weird is MacGyver E07 labels correctly but E08 does not. I did try to rename to (2016). But that didn’t seem to help.

Check & adjust “Local Media Assets” as @OttoKerner recommends.

Also try the Plex Dance. Do it for the entire show, not just one episode. This completely removes the show from your Plex Server and clears out any entries in Plex’s database. It helps many times when media files have been renamed or restructured.

Yup. This did it. All movies and tv shows are now displaying proper titles. Thanks everyone for the help!! Mainly @OttoKerner for the help that fixed my problem!!!
