I have a Late 2014 Mac Mini 2.8 GHz core i5, memory 8GB. Is this fast enough to stream 4K movies on this server with direct play?

I only use one stream at a time. So don’t really need to transcode.

Your first sentence has no bearing on your second sentence.

Transcoding takes place when for some reason, the Plex app on the client hardware cannot play the file requested as-is.

Reasons include: the native player can’t play the video or audio format so the server transcodes it into a compatible format; the bit rate is higher than the client can handle (e.g. remote playback with limited bandwidth); you’re using certain kinds of subtitles; etc.

So in order to answer your question you need to share:
What format are your files encoded in (video and audio)?
Will you be using subtitles?
What platform are you using for playback (computer, AppleTV, Roku, SmartTV app, etc)

I’m using a Navidia shield, HEVC Main 10@L5.1@High HDR10 TrueHD7.1.Atmos @ 4 218 kb/s. No subs If not needed.

yes that should be able to direct play on a shield.

(4218kb/s seems low for a real 4k file)
