Even the metadata that is retrieved from sites like thetvdb–content that Plex doesn’t even own or provide–is only accessible to the app now if you first go through plex.tv servers, sending a unique fingerprint along with the exact content you’re searching.
For all those years, Plex swore they don’t track what people watch, yet they’ve specifically engineered the program to phone home and taddle on this exact thing.
On top of this, the server constantly checks in online even if you’ve attempted to opt out or only use it offline. In fact, their ‘opt out’ affects nothing at all.
And now one cannot even run the Plex server offline, because they ported the codecs online. They used to be distributed with the software, but now they require you to connect it online to retrieve them.
Seriously scummy bullshit behavior, Plex. Does anyone in your company have the slightest reverence for people’s privacy? Or was that only until you established a large enough user base to stop caring?
