I Launch Plex, the chevron appears for 1 second and then app fails to launch

Server Version#: 1.20.3.3437-f1f08d65b
Player Version#:

I launch Plex, I see the Chevron logo appear for 1 second in the menu bar, then the app fails to launch.

Here are the steps I have taken as an attempt to solve the issue:

  1. reboot mac
  2. zap pram
  3. ran diagnostic to see if my databases are damaged, check ran good.
  4. ran the database first aid as per link below:
    https://support.plex.tv/articles/201100678-repair-a-corrupt-database/
  5. Backed up my database to an external drive, removed all of plex from my computer, reinstalled plex, DID NOT WORK!
  6. posting content in this forum.

I am on a MacBook pro 17" Mid 2010 running MacOS High Sierra Version 10.13.6.

I have been running plex without issues since October 2013. I made every update and no problems until I updated to the latest and greatest.

Now, regardless of which version, I use Time Machine to go back in time, can’t get it to work… Cleaned the system of all plex in all libraries and re-installed, that doesn’t work.

No matter after how hard I try, no matter which version I install, Plex will launch, show the chevron for a quick second, then fail to launch and chevron disappears…

Can someone please help me… I have seen others with the same exact issues, some get resolution by fixing the database and some do not…

Plex absolutely will not launch, even with a fresh clean install and removing all traces of plex from the mac libraries.

Your assistance is truly appreciated. Oy vey

did you already have a look at the server logs to identify what it’s doing before that crash?

check Plex Media Server.log and Plex Media Server [1-5].log

thank you for the reply - this is what i found…

do you know what this means?

sounds like some other application/server is already listening to the port used by Plex (32400)

on my modem/router i have the ip address of the computer using the port for plex… No other devices on my network have the same IP… I’m at a loss…

VPN active or a AV

Can you launch via browser?

https://app.plex.tv/desktop#

Yes, but without the server running I do not have my movie collection access… all folders have exclamation points…

Sounds like your drive has changed name

no, all drive names are the same… The server will not launch… The Chevron logo appears in the upper menu for a split second and then disappears…

Have you tried downloading Plex server again manually and swap out the app in applications folder. You will not lose anything.

yes, i have tried that many times… I also tried going back to a version from a month ago using my time machine… I have also completely uninstalled it, including all of prefs in the mac library files… started completely from scratch and the fresh install does exactly the same thing… To be quite honest, I have been using plex since 2012 and Mac since 1987… I consider myself pretty savvy with apple and plex… I’m lost completely… i’m just sitting here scratching my head… I have my library and prefs backed up on an external drive, so i’m not going to lose anything…

So you have followed these instructions exactly.

Yes, followed them exactly 3-4 times. Launched my terminal window, pasted the codes one by one, then it told me no errors, so I followed the instructions further and ran the repair anyway… it did not work. I have all of the log files from that too…

It’s so strange, I can’t even launch a fresh copy starting from scratch… I click the plex app, the chevron flashes for a second then gone, plex server not running in the menu bar, just a flicker and gone… It’s soooooooooo odd… If anyone wants to screen share on google hangouts, i’m happy to show what’s happening… I can also do a screen record. let me know…

my mac has been a dedicated plex server for 8 years, i never had a major issue like this… small issues here and there that were always fairly easy to figure out… but this has got me floored…

and I just went back in to the modem/router and assigned a new ip address to the computer, then reported the 32400 - then used a fresh plex app downloaded, and does EXACTLY the same thing… Chevron flickers in menu then gone… Plex server will absolutely not run..

Which MacOS version are you running?

Mac OS High Sierra 10.13.6
MacBook Pro 17" mid 2010
2.53 GHz Intel Core i5
8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Intel HD Graphics 288 MB

its been my dedicated plex server for 8 years or so… until last night… oy vey…

Here is a screen record of the issue… I hope this helps… Thank you so much for your assistance, I’m so boggled…

plex launch fail

My point was not about some misconfiguration on your router.
According to the log snippet you had posted above, Plex fails to register and listen to the server port (32400) locally on that Mac.
Did you recently install a new application or could it be you have Plex setup to run in a different user background on that machine?

Check this article to identify which application/process is currently listening to tcp/32400

Hi Tom, I plugged in 32400 in the field where it says port number, just like the instructions said… But it comes back with no such file or directory…

see below:

Last login: Sat Oct 17 12:49:05 on console

Dennis–Pro:~ dennis$ lsof -nP -iTCP -sTCP:LISTEN | grep 32400

-bash: port-number: No such file or directory

Dennis–Pro:~ dennis$ lsof -nP -iTCP -sTCP:LISTEN | grep

-bash: syntax error near unexpected token `newline’

Dennis–Pro:~ dennis$ netstat -anv | grep 32400

-bash: port-number: No such file or directory

Dennis–Pro:~ dennis$ netstat -anv | grep

-bash: syntax error near unexpected token `newline’

Dennis–Pro:~ dennis$ netstat -anv | grep 32400

-bash: port-number: No such file or directory

Dennis–Pro:~ dennis$ lsof -nP -iTCP -sTCP:LISTEN | grep 32400

-bash: port-number: No such file or directory

Dennis–Pro:~ dennis$

and i tried many ways for good measure… no dice…
