If Jeff Bezos would read my email, Plex would DIE!

He would hear my request to have FireTV allow the scanning and cataloging of local media from a shared resource such as NAS or other shared drives. I have been a loyal Plex fan since the early days, in fact, I moved from KODI to Plex, however, I must say in my opinion, Plex has lost its way! PLEX you are NOT a Streaming platform, at least not yet. Why ruin it for us?

Yesterday my internet cable went out, going on the second second day, at the same time for some strange reason the FireTV reset itself. Plex was already installed but not configured, I went to use Plex and what do you know, I CAN’T because it wants to authenticate online. I find myself using Plex less and less these days. The only feature I use is watching it remotely when I am away. Otherwise, it never gets used as the FireTV has already replaced you!, and it has a nicer interface!

I hate that online authentication. I hate the 10-second pause when auto-playing my show when it uses to do it automatically. I hate that it forces you to use all the crap (excuse me, those enhanced options and features) of free movies and other GARBAGE. At least allow us to select how we want the application to behave.

It is not all bad, the one item I did like was the addition of the videos games via Plex, then came the monthly fee, then came the “I don’t think so!”; Boxee tried adding features like Plex is currently doing (Yes, I tried that also) and it died a miserable death. Stick to what made you famous, enhance our experience, not degraded it by adding items we will never want or will never use. At the very least allow the ability for us to customize our settings. Loyal users will always follow.
As for me, it may be time to explore alternatives for remote viewing and sharing for a possible switch.

That is intentional. Since your server is claimed (i.e. secured), you need to authenticate the client, otherwise there is no point in having a secure server. As a work-around, you can go to your server and sign out. Then it won’t be claimed and no longer secure. You can then access it from an un-authenticated client.

You can turn that off from Plex Web. https://app.plex.tv/desktop/#!/settings/online-media-sources you will need internet access to do this. It’s an account wide setting.

This should be optional! not forced upon the user, the option should be initially disabled. especially when this is internal to everyone homes, where NAT is most likely in place forcing a user to open the port on the router. In other words, it is already secure.

This is my point!

anyway, I fixed all my issues. - just startup up my old Kodi Box that was still attached to the back of the TV.

This is exactly why I run a Jellyfin Server on the same machine and have it for internal (in house) use should I ever lose my internet access. Follows the same structure as my PMS and works without all the extra bs that can effect my family.

It is shameful we have find alternate methods of accessing the data we already have, especially when we already have an application. Not sure how much longer i will be using plex, for now it only has one purpose, Remote access . other than that i see no use for it.

Thank you for the suggestion, much appreciated. I will be trying JellyFin and Emby.

It is optional. When you first create a Plex Media Server, it is not claimed. That’s what allows you to access it and then claim it. By claiming it, you are linking it to your Plex account. There is also an option to disable security on your server, allowing you to access it without authentication even after it’s been claimed.

That only applies outside of your home network. Without your server secured, anybody connected to your network would be able to access and change anything in Plex Media Server.

This is an account level setting, which needs access to your account.

I find Plex useful for remote and account control for friends & family. But Podcast and Music support is also a big thing for me, my goal has always been to only have one app to access them all and Plex does that better than any other at the moment. With a long commute 6 days a week, I don’t want to have to access multiple apps on different devices (phone, car head unit, desktop, etc.)

Your welcome, I use Jellyfin because Emby has changed over to a platform too much like Plex with your server tied to your account with Emby.

Yes it is optional, but not to use all of the Plex pass features if not done.

This is such a convoluted process (and I understand the security reasons behind it) that my family at home, when I’m a state over at work, can’t follow to still have access to the PMS (when some idiot hits a phone pole) and can’t even watch Live TV from the antenna. Most of us (using this program) have some kind of technological awareness to be able to get it working around the security implementations to access without internet, but that doesn’t help my technophobic wife or my 75 year old mother. They just believe they should be able to open the app on the device I set up and it work. You know like we own it or something :man_shrugging:.
