im perPLEXed..no more plex home theatre?? what are my options?

Upon an update to my plex server. I learned that my plex home theatre (running on windows 7 on an htpc) no longer functioned properly… it wouldnt update what i was watching…que the next etc.

ive read that this is due to no more support for plex home theatre pc based… only an “app” now… which doesnt run on windows 7.

SO currently my server is out of date… and recent video files are having issues with playback that im sure an update wouldve fixed… im trying to update my gpu driver and codecs first…

but what are my options now in the future??
why leave us windows 7 htpc users in the dark? ive been a plex pass subscriber for years now… and it puts a bad greedy taste in my mouth. My only options are to update windows?

EDIT: updating my gpu driver fixed my playback issue… but i still feel like i will eventually be far to outdated to continue using plex as is…i’ll need to update my server eventually. and then plex home theatre wont work properly anymore.

Plex Home Theater has been updated to correct the watched issue.
See: https://www.plex.tv/downloads/ and scroll down to Plex Home Theater

Or you can download and install Open PHT, which is the community driven version of PHT as, other than some bug fixes, PHT will not be maintained going further.
See: https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/222972/release-openpht-1-6-2/p1

thank you. I had not noticed any update for PHT. Perhaps it was fixed on the latest server update? Or i need to do a clean install of PHT. i’ll update both today.
And i’ll start looking into open pht for the future… thanks

Plex Media Player is the official, Plex-developed replacement for PHT.

i did not notice that one in the downloads, thanks… I’ll check it out.

ah… you have to be logged in to see that download

Well… I installed the new one… i dont like the GUI… just like the xbox.
Found my issue with playback though, its a file with EAC3 5.1 audio… Which im not even sure what that is yet LOL But i know its due to my reciever not being able to decode whatever it is… DD and DTS are still working fine…

the new media player at least seems to be able to play the file without issue… theres no more setting between wasapi or direct, so im assuming the new player automatically can pass through a digital stream to my reciever…

This is confusing. What is the suggested solution here? Use the web interface since PlexHomeTheater is no longer developed?

This page suggests “Plex Media Player” is available for download and has instructions: https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/208050647-Getting-Started

But following the link to the download page lands the user here https://www.plex.tv/downloads/ but there is no download of “Plex Media Player”. Instead “Plex Home Theater” can be downloaded.

Maybe this is a left over of a transition phase, but currently I do not understand what the support article is trying to tell me and which solution a user should be going with. Tried to understand and consult the help, but it’s inconsistent and confusing.

Maybe it’s a premium only download? But if so, that should be stated very clearly on the respective help page.

Could someone explain?

like maybe in the big green text box at the top of the very page you linked to?

That’s just a word. There’s no indication that that is the requirement. But if team prefers to have users interpret the help pages rather than clearly stating obvious requirements, then yes, issue solved.

Seems pretty explicit to me…

Well that’s not a tip is it? It’s a requirement.

This would be indeed a tip:
Tip!: You can drag the app from the Applications folder to your Dock to allow one-click access to the Plex Media Player.

yes, let’s focus on the one arguably vague word, rather than the 25 that make it explicit.

Well I missed it, due to misjudging it’s nature. The tip below is so trivial, that I thought reading those tips was a waste of time. Obviously that was wrong on my part.
