Plex Home Theater 1.3.7 stopped working

About 2 weeks ago, my plex player (PHT) lost contact with the server, with only ‘Search’ appearing in the menu selections. This only happened to the player on my media player, a Mac mini. Plex on my macbook plays normally. Copying PHT from my macbook to the mini did not work (same issue - only ‘search’ as selections).
PHT was set to manual server selection (valid IP of the server) or automatic, made no difference. Restoring a backup from 3 months ago, no help.
Im guessing there’s a pref (?) file somewhere that’s keeping it working. Any insights are welcome.

Plex Home Theater has not been supported by Plex for over 2 years now.
It was released to the public.

It was replaced by Plex Media Player.

um, ok.

I know, no fun. At some point, it was going to break and the only path forward is PMP.

I’m on Plex Home Theater 1.4.1, but I also noticed it starting to only show “Search” the other day, even after restarting Plex, the whole computer, trying to configure the server IP and port manually etc.

I knew it’s been living on borrowed time, but sad to see it go. Is it the app just called “Plex” that one is meant to use as a player on the Mac these days?

After a quick try I really miss the “10 foot UI” and the keyboard-focused navigation - I’ve got a Mac Mini connected to a TV - but I’ll try it out more and give more detailed feedback.

Plex Media Player.
I use a mac mini as my front end, and a nas for storage. Plex (1.3.7) interface was faster to navigate, simpler, and I was (mostly) happy with it. Why it just quit working is a mystery to me.
But, …things change…
Im on the learning curve with Plex Media Player (2.20), and colorful language is now a part of my plex experience.
It is different.

Plex Media Player is the only way to get the Plex 10 foot UI on a PC or Mac.

that isn’t Plex Home Theater. it is a completely separate app.

use Plex Media Player - #105 by pcalves

I’m sorry? Plex Home Theater 1.4.1 isn’t Plex Home Theater?

And thank you. Currently trying out Plex Media Player. Close enough to PHT, though so far I like it less. Again, will try to give specific feedback in other threads and hope for improvements.

Is PMP still being maintained, then?

yes

it’s just called Plex like it says on the top of the app (for Mac or Windows) . It is for desktop use not HTPC use.

Thank you. I got the impression there had been some back and forth about whether to kill off PMP. Glad to hear it’s not currently going anywhere, then

You quoted me saying I was using PHT 1.4.1 (which I was, and seeing issues) and replied that it wasn’t PHT, which confused me. But I take your point about the app just named “Plex” being intended as a desktop app only. I was worried for a second I’d have to switch from PHT to that one on my HTPC.

To be clear Plex Home Theater was the old app of ours that was really just a port of XBMC/Kodi. It was open source and some users made app called OpenPHT but I don’t think anyone maintains it anymore as it generally does not work well with current version of the server but not totally sure since I don’t use it.

Plex Home Theater looks like this.

This image below, which is Plex 1.4.1, is a completely different app that like PMP shares no code with the old Plex Home Theater app.
