My old iMac has given up the ghost , it wont boot anymore , so I want to switch my plex server to a windows10 PC , ( I am a plex pass holder) , I unplugged the hard drive containing all my content from the mac and plugged it into the PC where it is recognised. Downloaded PMS fron plex.tv , launched it logged in and only see the default plex movies,tv and music folders , none of my own and there is no option to add anything to the library. Rebooted the PC and now the plex app wont even open. If I use the web. server , it opens but I cant add any of my content ?
sooooo many things

In order to complete the installation of your new Plex Media Server, you’ll need to access it through the bundled/local version of Plex Web. If you’re on the same PC, open a browser and navigate to http://127.0.0.1:32400/web

Keep in mind that things are organized VERY differently on Macs and PCs. The two key differences are the file organization / where Plex stores its server data folder and how each platform manages the key application settings
- Default data directory on Windows is
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Plex Media Server, while on the Mac it’s under~/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/(putting aside that you will only be able to read the disk itself if it’s formatted in a way Windows can deal with… it cannot deal with Apple’s APFS or the older HFS file systems) - Windows organizes its core settings in a database called the
Registry(data can be edited using an app called RegEdit)… while on the Mac they are stored in files under~/Library/Preferences/com.plexapp.plexmediaserver.plist
- Default data directory on Windows is
There’s no easy way to migrate your entire configuration across different platforms… if you’re willing to take up a lot of tinkering you can map the files to the proper target; settings will be a bit more complicated.
Thank you for replying , is it not possible to simply configure a new server on the PC , all my content , inc posters, fanart, nfo’s , srt’s etc is stored on the hard drive that now have plugged into the PC, Now that the iMac is effectively finished can I not start with a blank server on PC and add my libraries the usual way from the hard drive ? Why do I have to “migrate” ?
Yes… see #1 above
Thanks again , unfortunately am stuck now, it appears that the PMS download is corrupted , I have been trying to uninstall it from the PC fort a couple of hours now , every time i clk uninstall or repair I get the dreaded “no action was taken as system has to reboot” , downloading a fresh PMS , i get a setup box that gives the same options , “uninstall or repair” selecting either and am back to the “no action was taken as system has to reboot”. So basically I cant install clean PMS and I cant uninstall the existing one.
Not familiar with the minutiae of Windows.
Have you rebooted the device as implied by the message? Also… did you make sure that Plex is not running in the background while attempting to uninstall?
Then again… why do you want to uninstall it in the first place?
I wanted to uninstall because, it wasnt running in the background but it woudnt open and installing it again whilst it is still installed didnt work . In the end I managed to uninstall it with " Revo Uninstaller ", Am not going to risk going through all that again , will probaaly buy a mini pc that has quick sync support and have that as dedicated server, thanks for comments.
Bad idea… don’t use those uninstallers. They just create more of a mess.
If you want to fully uninstall your Plex Media Server in order to start over… here’s a procedure to follow:
