+! for Av1 support
Netflix just announced they’d be starting using AV1.
Plex you’re the last one to the party…

A new version of Plex Server is available on the Beta update channel.

There is a newer version of FFmpeg built-in. I thought that will do the trick.

I was wrong. Plex is still blocking direct play/direct stream of AV1 based videos.

Honestly? Plex is letting us down. Even Jellyfin can do direct play

This is not possible on Android TV. But thanks for the tip.

If it’s available (it is on the Shield TV), install Kodi and then install the Plex for Kodi plugin-in and use that to connect to your Plex server. My guess is that will play the AV1 files directly as I tested it with ASS subs and it directed play them without issue.

+1 for av1 support in Plex. This has been an issue for too long now.

+1 for AV1 support. It would be nice to start encoding videos in AV1.

I can transcode video using the latest version of SvtAv1 just as fast as x265, with similar or better quality, and much smaller file sizes, but I can’t play it back using Plex ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Definitely a 1+ for AV1, it is a great codec and seems to be the way of the future if it starts to pick up in popularity. I’ve been seeing it a bit more here and there so I’m thinking it is getting more popular.

It’s ridiculous to have to beg for av1 support for months without end.
I’m gonna look somewhere else already.

I can confirm, the Plex plugin for Kodi will direct play AV1 on the Shield TV.

This should be a no-brainer. Come on Plex! Embarrassing that media server is the main function and it can’t even do that right.

Jellyfin added AV1 support (and also discovered that VP9 is supported) as of yersteday and I confirm that it works like it should.
Plex is the only remaining media server that doesn’t support it (yet)

I see it directs plays. But there is no support on Kodi to playback.

Are you using an external player or something? IF that is the case how do you set an external player on it?

You are accessing your Plex server through the Plex Kodi Addon, correct?
Also, you mentioned Android TV. What is that actually running on?
Is it a TV or a set top box like a Shield TV (which is what I use).
Based on what @Boiski, the Plex Kodi Addon will play direct play AV1.
If you are using a Sony TV for instance that is running Android TV, it is possible the Plex Kodi Addon might be able to direct play AV1 because the underlying system might not support it.

While Kodi might use a different player then Plex, I believe there is still going to be a reliance on what the underlying system can handle/support, so you might be out of luck on that.

I figured I’d throw it out there as a possibility for those in this thread that use Android after seeing your comment but looks like it might have not worked out like I thought.

That would be easy enough to test. If VLC for Android TV plays it, the underlying system handles it fine.

+1 for AV1 support. The native player on my LG 4k TV won’t play my AV1 files so I suspect that adding support to the Plex app won’t help me right away, but this should definitely be on the roadmap

I have a large amount of files I can’t play in Plex because of this issue, I’m starting to get frustrated. What is the point of a PlexPass if our issues are not being acknowledged? Should I ask Plex via another method, if so what?

As a workaround you can use VLC to transcode to something compatible. A pain, but…

+1 for AV1 support
