add AV1
Kodi with plex plugin does the trick for external player. Kodi is the external player which direct plays. If you can play in Kodi maybe your hardware is limited?
You are not hearing people on this forum. Itâs not a question of a âwork aroundâ. Itâs an issue of PLEX ignoring legitimate requests from PlexPass customers. I bought mine a few years back and seriously I sometimes wonder if I made the right choice given no response on the issue (and others) from Plex.
It is a great pity to see where Plex is heading. The most important functions unfortunately very often no longer work. Itâs like a smartphone that you can no longer use to make phone calls. Iâm a developer myself and know what kind of effort goes into developing bug-free software. Over the years, however, software should become more stable and not bring more and more new errors. At least set up a proper bug tracker where people can report their bugs and support you.
+1 for AV1 support
As I have said previously, their focus seems to be streaming integration. Not basic functionality. It used to be that something from my collection would start playing right away. Now Plex always has to think about it, for a bit. God knows whyâŠ
I tried Kodi on Android TV, with the Plex plug-in. It only started the Plex app on the TV anyway.
That doesnât sound right or it sounds like you might have the wrong impression.
After you install Kodi, you should have gone to the Add-ons section and go to Downloads then Video add-ons and youâll find the Plex add-on. After you do that, it should launch Plex within the Kodi app. It is going to look like a native Plex app because Plex actually created but it will look different then the Plex app for Android as the side menu doesnât exist and your libraries are on the top (at least that is how it looks on mine and I didnât do anything other then install it and go to the settings to change the overall quality setting and make it so that Plex starts when Kodi is launched).
Iâm guessing you are just getting thrown because it looks like a Plex app but it is in fact the Kodi add-on. Also, if you start playing something and you look at your serverâs dashboard (if itâs your server and you arenât accessing somebody elseâs) youâll see that it it says that the player is listed as âPlex for Kodi - Kodiâ and know you are using Kodi.

When I went to do that, there was a Plex entry already there (with a folder icon). It launched the Plex app. I suspected that one of the apps looks for the other, and makes a connection. Wasnât important enough to debug.
Please add support for AV1 codec playback
Yeah, +1 for Av1 support
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE implement the AV1 codec into Plex. Itâs FREE. What could be better? I am also having trouble playing some of the Youtube videosâŠ
Itâs getting old seeing basic features not yet implemented in a service I pay for that have been part of free competitors for months or even yearsâŠ
On Android TV (Nvidia Shield TV), AV1 playback works fine in Plex for Kodi (ie, direct play using Kodi decoders), but not in the Plex app.
The point of AOM AV1 is to be open and free of royalties⊠whatâs the excuse for not having it supported already?
âwhatâs the excuse for not having it supported already?â
Probably because almost nothing has hardware support to decode it. Max compatibility>fringe codec support
Obviously, this guy hasnât read any of this tread, while we have been discussing all the consumer products that do play AV1.
Iâd really appreciate AV1 support now. Iâm finding that for SD content, AV1 is a great codec to encode my library to, in order to save space. The results at similar bitrates look much better than x264 and encode times are acceptable (around 0.5x realtime for me). For content that isnât watched a lot, where transcoding is fine, it would be a good benefit and cost saving in storage.
+1 av1 support
+1 for AV1 support.
My LG CX television supports AV1 and can play AV1 files just fine, PLEX app on the LG CX does not allow direct playback of these same files even though the device clearly supports AV1.
+1 av1 support
Itâs been two years at this point, this should really at least be acknowledged as something that needs doing.
