[implemented] Change how Plex Handles Multi-Episode Files

There is nothing you can do to make Plex show a double episode in two parts and be split if it’s all one video file. My suggestion was just to get rid of the double entry, so it doesn’t show part 1 and then part 2 but clicking on both would play the entire file from the beginning.

I agree. Dealing with children’s shows is driving me crazy. How do I vote? I don’t see an option to at the top of this forum.

It’s at the very top, just to the left of the thread title.

This is the one feature about Plex that drives me crazy! This really needs to be resolved.

Would love to see the Plex devs take a look at this. The recommended naming scheme suggests this multi-episode format and it’s really confusing/jarring to watch the same episode twice.

Yes, this is definitely maddening when it comes to cartoons. I voted!

There’s potentially good news on this front: TVDB has a v3 of their API which will allow more episode order lists. Once they work out the kinks and it’s officially up and running then for a lot of these shows we’ll be able to choose not only Aired Order vs. DVD Order, but alternate third, fourth, etc, orders that might combine the episodes correctly.

Now, when that’s going to happen, I don’t know. TVDB already launched and then yanked it because it broke so much stuff. But, in theory, it could go a long ways towards making this bug significantly less infuriating. Though I’ll be the first to admit that the fact that it exists at all is still patently insane considering it’s like, you know, basic media management functionality and probably mostly fixable in an hour by any decent developer.

A different approach was implemented in Plex Server now (as of version 1.18.3.2111):
Episodes in the same file are marked as ‘watched’ too.
Duplicate enqueuing of the same file is prevented.

If you want this thread to be closed, thus releasing all of your votes to spend on a different request, please say so.
(Each user can also remove his vote manually, as long as the thread is not closed, yet.)

I think the core feature has been implemented now, even if the approach was different. I removed my vote manually, but at least prima facie, I think it is fair to say that the thread can be closed? Though of course, others can weigh in as well here.

HUGE thank you to the Plex devs for implementing this! It’s going to make everyone’s whole Plex experience better.

Question: What happens when auto play is turned on? Will it play the correct episode next (i.e., the file has eps 4 and 5, auto play should play episode 6 ideally) or would it play the same episode again.

I’ll admit, I don’t know how this actually plays out right now as I have gone with the method of having it show as one episode and not showing the second episode in Plex.

(Anyone can answer this that as it setup like this BTW and is on the latest beta, but figured OttoKerner might have the answer).

Currently if you have a file labeled S01E01E02 and you play Episode 1 then both episodes play as a single continuous episode. After it finishes, it marks Episode 1 as Watched, then starts playing the exact same episode again because it thinks it’s “Episode 2”, which is obviously wrong.

What it now does is play the file labeled S01E01E02, then when it finishes it marks both Episode 1 AND Episode 2 as Watched, and then correctly starts playing Episode 3.

Thanks for the response @rwoffice. That actually makes sense if the watch next uses the watch status to determine what to play next, which is sounds like it does as you said.

Thanks again!

Thanks to all the Plex developers for implementing what you have. It’s exactly what I wanted!!! I have removed my Vote.

So far nobody has expressed the desire to keep this thread open.
I will therefore close it now and change the title to [implemented], thus freeing up the votes of all users who voted on it.
