Stack TV show episodes if multiple episodes in one file

Think this might have been brought up in the past but the one thread I found was closed. Emby has a way that if a file contains multiple episodes, it will lump them together in the interface. With Plex, its breaking them out into 2 parts but when watching it will play the complete file from the beginning. I know there is a way to split the episodes using MKVTooLNix but its time consuming and I have files that the episodes are in one file with little to no gap between the episodes to even break them apart.

Can you share a reference to how this works in Emby?

If there’s a single file with multiple episodes, how does Emby know where one stops and the next starts?

I suppose this is not so much about knowing where in that single file each individual episode starts but about how those multi-episode files are displayed inside the user interface. Plex gives no indication to the average user that an episode item is part of a group of episodes merged in a single file.

Apparently Emby is displaying this differently. While I have no personal experience with it, I assume it’s kind of how Apple’s “Photos” is displaying a “heap of pictures” in a multi-select situation (same as Finder w/ files) – not sure if this includes the UI “merging” the single episode’s titles and descriptions.

In my own library, the few multi-episode files left are mostly season finales… in which case it’s easy just to keep Plex believing it’s actually a single episode (dropping the final file which most often shares the episode title).
Just did a search – it seems to be as simple as displaying 1 item per file and showing a combination of that files information, e.g.

Property Value
Identifier S1, E1-2
Title <Episode 1 title> & <Episode 2 title>

TL;DR
There used to be a feature suggestion describing this behavior. It’s closed as “implemented” (maybe for a subset of the feature; I didn’t follow the complete 95 posts) – despite that there’s still quite a number of votes connected to it. Let’s keep this similar request open until we’ve been able to investigate the “odd status” of that other suggestion

I believe that “[Implemented]” in that other topic refers to this:

That wasn’t exactly the original request, but it was a big improvement in user experience. Personally I like it better than “Just name it for the first file, and ignore the gap” workaround.

@jsc1205, does @tom80H’s description match your feature suggestion?

A request for the same feature exists already, and it has more votes.

Therefore this one is closed, to prevent spreading the votes across several threads, even though they vote for the same (or at least very similar thing).

Votes are given back to the users who voted on this request. Please think of re-voting in the other thread if you still want it.
