[Implemented] Feature Request: Continue Playback Between Devices with PlexAmp

I think it would be an excellent feature to be able to handoff playback from computer to phone or vice versa, such that I can continue my playlist when I walk away from my computer, then move it back when I return. This would need to be optional, but I believe Spotify has a similar feature to this such that I can continue listening to the same music “session” on whichever device is the most convenient for the current time.

Isn’t that what the music library option Store track progress is for? If enabled, you should be able to continue listening like you’re otherwise able to continue watching movies/shows…
> Manage Library > Edit...Advanced > Store track progress

Store track progress is intended for non-music audio libraries, such as audiobooks, and should not be enabled for music libraries.

Controlling playback on other plex apps is supported - see Category : Casting, Flinging, & Remote Control | Plex Support

Note that Plexamp currently can only act as a controller, though I believe adding receiver capability is planned.

Yeah the “Control playback on other Plex apps” is closer to what I’m looking for, but what I’m unclear on from that link is if it would continue my playlist, or just the current item. I use the radio function a lot, and what I’m often looking to do is continue my current radio between devices.

Yes, when connecting Plexamp to another player the current queue will continue, and can then be controlled from Plexamp or the receiver app. I can’t guarentee this behaviour for all controller/receiver combinations, but this has been my experience in general.

Just catching up on this thread.
With the release of Plexamp 4.0 you can now pick-up an ongoing playback from one device and continue it on another.

e.g.:

  1. Start playback of some songs on Plex Web (or another app)
  2. OpenPlexamp
  3. Open the Cast/Fling menu
  4. Select the app currently streaming (e.g. Plex Web) → Now you can remote control that playback
  5. Select This device from the Select Player menu → Now the stream is playing on This device through Plexamp.

In #4:

  • the :notes: icon indicates an ongoing stream (next to the song/artist playing)
  • the :arrow_down_small: icon seems to indicate that you can takeover the stream from that device

TL;DR: considering this suggestion to be implemented

That’s actually not the same thing as I envision…

I’m playing a playlist on PlexAmp in my car. I turn off the car, go in the house, and start PlexAmp on a PC or other device - I would like to then start listening to the SAME music I was listening to in the car.

I agree that this does not satisfy the feature request, and that MrGolden’s suggestion is more closely aligned with what I had envisioned.

This could be an extra option:
eg Always switch Plexamp to last played song
personally I prefer the method Plexamp has deployed in 4.0, it is easy to use and covers a wider range of use cases without arbitrarily taking over my queues on devices when I want separate music playing.

Now this is done maybe HomePod integration is next for release!!!???

Yeah I agree it shouldn’t be the default behaviour, but it would be a nice toggle to effectively say “I only want one ‘session’ and I want it to follow me from device to device.” Also this shouldn’t replace the workflow tom80H describes, just augment it.

So you’re looking for a solution to pickup your current (music) play queue from another device (maybe similar to a „continue listening“ hub)?

Yes, exactly this. Basically, if I’m listening to music on my PC and want to switch to my phone when I need to leave the computer, I want to continue where I left off and, ideally, be able to switch back seamlessly when I return to my computer.

Correct.

And actually, I think it should simply be the default behavior, rather than adding a toggle to enable/disable it. Because, if the user wants to hear something different, they can just select something different - which is what they would have to do anyway, if this were not the default behavior

I personally disagree about that one.
However, that doesn’t really matter.

I suggest if you like that kind of a “roaming play queue” / “between devices queue sync”, you revive that other suggestion while we close this one (given you can manually/actively hand-off an active stream to another device).
