An +700 people who love this feature… people with concerns or complaining will raise their voices first… the silent majority is happy and doesn’t visit the forum ![]()
Most people don’t want to see Plex remove Discover. They only want the FREEDOM to turn it off.
The problem was that Plex didn’t give the users that freedom. But, that appears to be changing based on vocal user feedback.
And, that is a good thing.
If anyone has a problem with a simple off switch, then they are the real whiners.
I am just saying it is not the most people
I respect everyone’s opinion.
I really hope we could have an update on what Plex would do with the ads leading to external non appropriate content for children.
Has even a single person suggested they have a problem with it? I really can’t imagine anyone having a problem with the option being provided. The real argument is over if it should be opt-in or opt-out, and if the switch should be client, account or server level. I would definitely argue for opt-out and account level, personally.
This may be true, but If you wish to give your child access to PBS Kids locally using on the LiveTV DVR and additional kid channels provided by Plex LiveTV streaming channels, additional content is easily accessible within their account. This content included access of news, sports, and even some violent or mature content. What would have solved this is a listing of channels from both sources and only allowing or disabling and locking away any other channels that would be hidden of view on that HOME managed users account. Check box form, BOOM
SOLVED.
There are no additional blocking/locking mechanisms for both of those sources.
Again, what I wish to be addressed is for the
-
Live TV + DVR local feature
-
Plex Live TV streaming channels feature
This granularity and customization would increase Plex’s usability by ten fold.
I’ll reiterate that, I OPTIMISTICALLY thought these controls would have been worked on in the last two years since being launched but alas, Plex continues their tyranny by adding new features without properly working out what they already had to fix or improve on first.
Emby already implemented time restrictions as well as that granular breakdown of SPECIFIC age restrictions. Not just predetermined and grouped per what Plex THINKS is best for US.
EMBY Parental controls
Emby is waiting for you …
Opt in and client level thankyou.
However, I’m beyond caring too much as I can supervise what my grandkids watch without having Plex be my Nanny. The stuff I watched as a kid, LOL.
I was in full support of fully disabling Discover etc but what Plex have given is enough personally, Time for me to unsub this thread.
I hope those seeking more get what they want.
Competition is healthy. And Plex can no longer get away with false marketing.
I merely just want everyone making decisions, calling the shots to have accountability for what they are releasing out to their users of their platform on all clients. It’s pretty obvious that they can’t handle their own features and drop them… calling out the “several of you” that had used Podcasts.
Got no problem either dropping $120 down on Emby. It’s just that Plex thinks they got the 25 million users so they will do what they wish with us.
@Atomatth
This fix has shown up on my Apple TV and my iPad, but it has not yet shown up on my Roku. I have done a manual check for updates and it finds nothing. Any idea what is going on, or when this will show up on my Roku?
Has anyone else with a Roku received this update?
Sadly yes. At least two or three users have.
At least one of those users contradicts themselves on a regular basis.
Apparently “stop whining and just turn the feature off” and “the feature can’t be turned off completely”…are the same thing.
Or at least close enough to not matter.
Picking & choosing what you hear from a post is a personal problem. Hearing someone say that the car is Red & assuming every car you see with red tail lights is a “Red Car” is the car in question is a fault of the person choosing to interpret things in a way that they clearly weren’t intended. Someone with that level of understanding will never be able to understand, so don’t worry about them. People complain because they can’t remove the feature. Then they can remove the feature & they complain because it’s not “Completely” removed because the code for it is still ticking away in the back of the program & they are just certain that that code is going to tell The Mouse Mafia that they have illegal stuff or tell some advertiser that they watched some show about Jim digging a hole & feeling the Glory of a job well done. Can you completely disable it? Yes. By the general interpretation of the meaning of those words you can. BUT IF by remove you mean take the code out of the program, then no, you can’t do that. It’s stupid to think that you would be able to, & stupid to think that somehow your rights are being violated by not.
An equally stupid request.
You didn’t read the second half of my sentence. I didn’t say it was odd for a search toggle to be near search, I said it was odd because of all of the other toggles are already in one place (which plex users have already been conditioned to go to)
From a programing standpoint, adding “more ways to watch” to the options of where to search was probably quicker than adding a disable Discover and watchlist options to one of the various settings panels for the account or client.
But I would expect we see a disable completely and\or granular controls of what options are available of this feature set eventually.
Optimistically:
It’s a provisional UI element, placed there to provide something in the short term while refactoring for the overall toggle gets implemented (not planning to allow disabling presumably means now having to route all the code behaviour through new checks)
Cynically:
It’s a deliberately anti-patterened and obscure UI element that’s a partial disable being touted as a full disable, and all we’ll get.
At this point I’ll just let how they handle this decide whether I continue with Plex. However good or bad a feature, coercion is not OK, and neither is illusory agency.
This is exactly my point. Plex USERS haven’t been conditioned to go there, Plex ADMINS have. The Admins who no matter where it is will probably be alright. They’ll remember where it is once they use it the first time as well. But the average user, the ones who are NOT admins, will have a harder time finding it. I read your post. That’s why I was pointing out the flaw in your logic, the “Plex Isn’t thinking about it’s users” is a faulty argument, because this is better for the average user. The only people it makes less sense for is Us Admins, who, I assume, will find it ourselves anyway. We just take longer to do so. I know I personally struggled to find it when it said it was out. Even so, when I did I felt that location made sense & I only had trouble finding it because I was trying to find it before I used it.
More Particularly it’s easier to use there from a streaming device by far, where most average Joe’s will be doing it
I don’t even know how to respond to this. LostOnTheLine, you seem very upset over what was a minor comment. Anyway, let’s set a few things straight:
- admins are almost always also users, so it’s doesn’t really make sense to divide them so
- I never said “Plex Isn’t thinking about it’s users”, don’t put words in my mouth
- if plex was really “thinking about the users”, they’d probably just put it in both places
- we’re both dumber for having spent our time on this
That all said, I’m out. Not going to return to the forums until the next time plex introduces another community dividing feature.
lol… I guess I’m the only one who uses Roku.
@Atomatth
Can you please respond? Any idea when this will show up on my Roku?
I’m seeing it in the most recent Plex Preview app (v7.0.8.7673). If you’re using the stable release, it probably hasn’t made it there yet.
Thanks!
