[Implemented] Fully Disable Discover & search results from Streaming Services (More Ways To Watch)

Dude, you can turn off the results in the search. But if you don’t want to use search then I guess by all means don’t use it.

@Atomatth, could you give us an update on what is being said at your level or higher and what to expect in one of the next releases on that matter ?

Thank you very much !

I just want the watchlist to respect my local content, that if I have added it from my library, keep the poster, information and others. At the moment, if I add a series from my library, sometimes I find that it has another poster, different information, seasons that I don’t have with different posters, and on top of that I have to select my server.
Couldn’t it be done that IF I have it in my library, take that? If it is so necessary to show the streaming services, you can do it, some extra button in the menu or maybe in the “more” button.

Not at all, as I’ve pointed out an Ad is something that Promotes something, like a product at the store on an End Cap so it gets seem MORE or Easier than others, this is just an isle with all the products in it. & the sorting of how you want that isle organized is done by you. You say “I like cookies” so the cookies are put on the most accessible shelf. You say “I only like whole wheat bread” so all other bead is still there, but put on the bottom shelf. Promoted literally means being put in a high place (here meaning more visible & easier to get to). Who, pray tell, is being promoted?

BUT, as I said, even if they WERE ads, what you pay doesn’t include the feature to Remove Ads so it has nothing to do with it. Being a Plex Pass subscriber is completely irrelevant

Oh why the hell not, you seem so high on your horse right now…

I know you could have just googled this yourself and forgone the pretentious post, but some people just feel the need to keep going I guess. And yes I am one of those people also! (for now anyway)

When and where did I ever say my children were under 18? My children are 21 and 23. Both had to pay for the app on their own phones. When did I say otherwise?

It shows up if you put any item into the “Watch List”, which then shows links to 3rd party sites or apps on every instance of Plex Home Page on any OS. Once again if I don’t want to use it (Watch List) but it still shows up I should be able to toggle it off. This includes the tab you keep telling me not to look at. Why is this a hard concept for you to grasp? My server is not yours, whom I invite to it is non of your concern and those who are invited don’t need you to tell me how I want MY Server to appear as a whole.

Please feel free to continue to be Plex’s Self Charged “Fact Checker” on other peoples feelings and opinions. But until I see your name with a “Plex Employee” badge next to it, what you consider “misinformation or false facts” is about as relevant as any other “Fact Checker” I’ve encountered. But this will be the last time I respond to you for any reason. Good Day Sir

So promoting something on a platform that is not my plex pass server that plex, inc gets a financial incentive for is not an advertisement?

Remember - plex, inc cannot legally remove discover dur to contractual obligations. Plex, inc admitted this further up the chain.

No matter how many bold and italicizing remarks you make - plex, inc is injecting advertisements to my paid for plex pass server and clients. An ad is an ad is an ad. Simple as that.

Well congratulations you found a definition of Billboard… Which I never questioned… A billboard is indeed used to show advertisements. I just didn’t know a very large board came out of your computer. That’s a technological marvel if you ask me… But which also does absolutely nothing to support your point. If you think More Ways To Watch fits the definition of Billboard… I don’t even know wher to start on that nonsense…

My question was 'Where are you getting a definition of Advertisement that fits More Ways To Watch “By Definition”?’

But if you want a definition of Advertisement from your same sources

  • a picture, short film, song, etc. that tries to persuade people to buy a product or service, or a piece of text that tells people about a job, etc.:
    • Doesn’t fit, as nothing is trying to persuade you. It just lists them, in the order you choose. For it to fit this definition it would have to put someone’s results at the top… or promoted…
  • a picture, sign, etc. that is used to make a product or service known & persuade people to buy it:
    • It does make a product or service known… At least kinda, it makes the fact that the service has the thing you serached for on it known, but it does nothing to persuade you to buy it. You might decide to buy it because your search history keeps showing that everything you search for is on Netflix, but them being on the shelf does nothing to persuade you. You having information from your own searches may convince you to, but the person advertising is yourself… I guess if you stretched it you could squeeze into the definition if you consider the advertiser to be you, & your searches the medium… But even that’s a stretch

The closest you could get is the type of advertisement where products are in the checkout line, but that’s really a stretch because the only ones that are there are the ones you choose, or all of them depending on how much you want to stretch it.

That’s nice. But if they are adults… what makes you think you have the right to dictate what shows on THEIR app? As we’ve already been over how More Ways To Watch doesn’t exist anywhere on your server. I do appologize, many people have made that argument about it being necessary to control it from a server lever for the purpose of being able to prevent their kids from seeing it. Again, I was on board with that until I learned that Managed Users can’t see it at all.

The idea that you should be able to remove the Watchlist from your Homescreen I can understand. I believe it’s petty, I doubt you’ll get it, but that’s your loosing battle to fight. Also a User Settings option to have Discover not show in the list at all, the same way as Live TV, Movies & TV, & Music I think is a reasonable request, I’d personally support that mostly in hopes that it’d have a Enabled for Managed Users option. But again I don’t think we’ll get it, but that’s something to fight for if it’s important. But the continual focus on things that have already been established are part of the game now, is just dumb. A Plex Official has said that the Online streaming Services are contractual obligations & those won’t be going away. Trying to argue that because you pay for a Plex Pass you should be able to turn it off is never going to go anywhere. Trying to argue that reason you NEED to be able to turn it off is to protect kids (even if that’s not your personal one) is unfounded & will never go anywhere. Trying to call it advertisements to claim it should go away because the variety of reasons, none of which are grounds for it is no different from when people were insisting it was illegal because the data from their server is being used. Which, after being explained so everyone got that it wasn’t what they thought & it was fully legal , & that their data is safe, that reoccurring argument has stopped. I just want that same thing for the arguments that “It’s an Ad”, & “It’d dangerous for kids”, & “It’s on my server” to go away as well. Because THOSE arguments aren’t helping, & no matter how many times you shout it, it never will.

Do you consider the items that are stocked in your supermarket advertisements? The supermarket gets paid by the companies to stock their products. They ALSO get paid MORE to put those products on the Checkout Line, on the EndCaps, in the middle of the shelf. THOSE are advertisements, albeit ones you don’t realize are happening. As of now the Streaming Services are not at all promoted… Actually I take that back, When choosing Streaming Services there ARE some that are at the top of the List as "Popular Services" so that would be an advertisement, but only when selecting them, though most people don’t mind that because it makes it quicker especially if you only have a couple. I’m afraid it will eventually end up in the realm where they all end up with Netflix & Disney who have money to flex, being always at the top, & I hope this outrage gives Plex some pause when they are considering it. Though I’m sure the money will win out in the end unfortunately.

Again, the server is free. This new stuff has no effect on the Plex Pass Extras you pay for

Exactly. And something that isn’t an ad isn’t going to become an ad because people yell about it. Very True

Congratulations to you too smart guy, you took a part of my statement and ask for where I was getting a definition from, if your going to start to pull selected words then play this semantic bullshit to make yourself feel better, good on you but in no way does that make you correct, a pretentious keyboard worrier yes, correct no. My statement was…

A billboard on the side of a highway with only the words “South of the Border” is an advertisement by definition

You asked “where you are getting this definition…”

I don’t care how big the letters are, Billboard Size or Type 12 Font in a link to a 3rd party web page showing on My Server. An Advertisement it still is.

Bless you on your journey to educate anyone who interacts with you, I truly feel sorry for them.

Oddly enough every time I come back to see this thread the Vote Count grows, so despite your belief that you are correct and everyone of us is using false facts or misinformation, people still feel this hasn’t been fully fixed.

Give it up people. You’re not getting anything accomplished.

You’re all wrong in your own special little ways.

No, I took your reply to MY statement when you started talking about what “IS an Advertisement”

Where you used a Billboard as a metaphorical replacement for “Advertisement”, where you equated the billboard & what you are calling an Ad as the same thing.

Because you were saying scrolling through a list was “The same thing” as doing a search that finds a word even when it’s not at the front of something or when it is in an episode name not a show name.
You start by saying that “Searching” & “Scrolling to search” are the same thing, then continue with a statement saying "A billboard on the side of a highway with only the words “South of the Border” is an advertisement by definition"

You then provide a definition of billboard with the word “Advertisement” in it to skate around the subject because that’s the only way to avoid the fact that the More Ways To Watch does NOT fit the definition of Advertisement. You even make reference to the metaphor by saying that the billboard having an exit number is the links to other streaming sites. Since I thought you were obviously not talking about an ACTUAL billboard, I chose to assume you weren’t saying that the More Ways To Watch was an actual sign because the metaphor seemed obvious. My bad. But since you were talking about it as a metaphor, there was never an actual billboard bring discussed. Like if someone said about a contestant at a competition “He’s a tiger tearing through the competition” & then later said “That tiger is the definition of fierce” are they talking about an actual tiger? No. Of course not. That’d be ridiculous.

This is obnoxious.

This is a ridiculous feature. I am hosting my own library because I want exact control over what is available. I do not care for the Disneys or Netflixes of the world, if I wanted anything from them I would have a subscription from them. So at least let me opt out of this, or make it a default opt-out to begin with, this feature goes against the spirit of self hosted media in every way.

If this feature becomes the norm and can’t be disabled I will move to a different platform, I’m sure an open source team will appreciate the 5€ donation per month instead.
Vote with your wallet people. Plex works without the plex pass until you’re ready to take the leap.

TL:DR This sucks, gib option to disable.

In no way does a supermarket have any relevance to a plex server or any clients I pay for. Curious as to why you think bolding and using italics strengthens your argument.

Next you’ll try and come up with a car analogy and we will have gone full slashdot.

Discover and watchlist are advertisements in an early alpha state because plex, inc had a milestone payment due from investors and needed to push these advertisements to production. That’s it.

TL;DR

Your formatting is annoying AF dude

Never gonna happen.
I don’t mean the off switch…purely the EGO.

He’s now talking ■■■■ about something else he has no clue about in a different thread.

I also use emby. I prefer it over Plex.
Plex has been buggy over the years as emby has remained a constant joy to use.
Plex keeps adding “features” that no one ever asked for or wanted.
The one good thing they have done in recent years that I can remember is PlexAmp.
This is the last straw for me. I Pulled one of my votes just to add my voice to this issue.
Plex has become a Garbage company, I will use for my Movies and TV shows until Plex can prove themselves useful again.

Edit

I know It has been a while but I wanted to change my opinion on this. I am happily using Plex for the past year or so without any significant issues. I have been using plex off and on since the xbmc days and it being a relatively solid platform today makes me happy.

I’ve never bean the voice of reason here and I have Read only about half of the S#!t posted here.

But I Voted! In flavor.

And Hey Keep up your petty posts, if you wish, only you and a few actually read them (in full, I skim and skip) and many ignore this.

Hey, Take a rest and see what Plex DOES.
VOTE! if you haven’t already…

I would love to use Emby, the devs are great, but the interface is SO ugly… If they did a redesign I’d jump in for sure.

IT is true I do like the Plex Interface , It is so clean and well designed and client support is great… but for me Sadly the cons of Plex outweigh the pros, If they can get their act together and actually listen to their user-base. I might come back. I am still using Plex just for music (PlexAmp is great) but until then I will put up with Emby’s blocky interface, rock solid reliability, and amazing Devs.
