@hstamas - Actually, it has improved within the past few months. Not yet finished imo though.
Plex Web now has the ability to go to a collection from a movie’s info screen. If you have a collection of movies, click on one of the movies, there’s a >x< collection category below cast and extras. Click that collection category and it loads a filter of just those movies.
Just tried this, even though it works…it’s still not the same as being able to create your own custom categories.
I don’t even know what to write here anymore.
Do the developers think they implemented what we ask here already?
Are they confusing what we want with the custom filter they call “collections”? I’m genuinely interested to know.
It’s been years. Literally. Damn we are closing in on half a decade here. There are not so few of us, especially when you are looking at all the similar requests, that they couldn’t acknowledge this.
We just want something as easy as this: http://kodi.wiki/view/Movie_sets
Maybe Plex collection are usefull for someone… but it’s not that we want!

I share the frustration. And my conclusion is that the main problem that Plex has is that it is made by programmers, not by genuine cinephiles. That is, those who make Plex are content to make an application that meets the basic needs of the general public, not the specific needs of a true lover of cinema. That’s why they do not understand priorities like this.
Whatever. To create movie collections I use this script, which I love.
http://forums.plex.tv/discussion/147554/create-collections-from-a-csv-list-export-from-icheckmovies-com
I’m a software developer and I can tell you, with some confidence, that it isn’t much different than the TV show collections. Add to that the example of Kodi for all to see and it becomes very hard to understand why it hasn’t been done already.
Also, playlists. How hard is it to create playlists that are shared with all users on your server? A few changes to the backend database and it’s done.
How many people would be interested in throwing in a few bucks to hire a developer to build an app that would create a collection using an icheckmovies CSV download and your local Plex movie database? Clearly it wouldn’t fix the inherent problems with collections… but it would address the creation issue and certainly make collections a heck of a lot easier.
Work flow would be something like:
- Create CSV file locally or find an icheckmovies list (collection) on icheckmovies.com
- Download movie list (collection) from icheckmovies in CSV format
- Open new app
- Choose your Plex database
- Choose CSV file you downloaded from icheckmovies.com or created locally using the correct formatting
- Name your new Collection or choose from an existing collection list (edit existing)
- Execute
- Collection is created/modified in Plex of a cross reference between what is in your library and what is in the CSV list from icheckmovies
Any interest?
That should be a great idea, if anyone is able to.
I don’t 100% understand the proposed suggestion above but I would be up for having an app to help be created. It would be expensive though would it not?

I don’t think it would be too much. I’m guessing someone here may even volunteer if we come up with a couple hundred dollar bounty (or thereabouts). There is already a python script that does most of what I’ve outlined… I’ve just never been able to get it to work.
I’d be in for $50. I’d be happy to set up an Indigogo (or like campaign) if there is interest. I’ll start asking. around for developers with SQL and universal app development skills … but if there is someone here that is able/willing to have a go, let me know.
The way I’ve automated the process so I can easily make updates to all my collections is by using the Automator app on Mac OS. I share the Automator file for anyone who wants to try it.
Instructions.
Download and unzip the attached file.
- Place the “PlexCollections” folder inside the macOS “Applications” folder
- Open the “Automator” application on macOS.
- Select the file “PlexAutomator”. (File / Open)
- Press execute. (The play button at the top right).
Ready.
In the Automator window you can add as many collections as you want by copying the path and specifying the name of the collection and the exact name of the CSV file. And do not forget to add the CSV file inside the folder called “CSV”
If there is an error, please check that Python is installed on your system.
The version at /System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework is installed by Apple and is used by the system. It is version 3.6.2 in my case.
You may check that by:
which -a python python3
To check third version, use:
python3 --version
My server is a windows machine, does this count me out from any of these solutions or is there an app or script or process i can use for windows?
I’m using linux terminal as i use a vps.
Robot2xl - this is terrific and works for me… how it’s getting past the Python unicode errors that have plagued me for years, I have no idea. Have you tried to variable-ize it by allowing you to choose the CSV file and also to name the collection? If not I’d be happy to take a crack at it if I can recall how to put variables into scripts.

Maybe you did not modify the script correctly to work well on Mac OS. Try using the script I shared previously
and put in your terminal “f”, “t” and “x”.
To add your own collections using Automator, add the CSV file to the CSV folder (make sure the file name does not have any spaces) and add each collection in Automator line by line and only change the name of the CSV file and the name of the collection.
/Applications/PlexCollections/create_plex_icm_collection.py -f /Applications/PlexCollections/CSV/NAME+OF+YOUR+FILE.csv -t "NAME OF YOUR COLLECTION" -x
It’s a single line. Without cuts.

If you use Linux download the original script without modifications that I include as attachment in this comment and write the line correctly in your terminal.
create_plex_icm_collection.py -f NAME+OF+YOUR+FILE.csv -t "NAME OF YOUR COLLECTION" -x
It’s a single line. Without cuts.

If you also have a Mac computer, make a copy of the Plex database you have on your Windows server, make the modifications, and then re-add it.

I have no idea how Plex prioritises what features to work on, but in case it’s based purely on comments here I’m adding my vote for improving the “Collections” feature. (And therefore my apologies for repeating points already made.)
All I want to be able to do is have each collection showing up as a single icon in the default “By Title” movie listing and then being able to click on that icon to see the movies in that collection. This way, I see individual movies that are not in collections as well as the collection icons. As others have said, it’s not too dissimilar to what is already done for TV Series.

What client are you using?Plexweb and most client should have a feature called “Collections” that let you group movies this way. Note this is a sorting category it doesn’t stack them in one icon in normal browsing.
Also every movie has a “Sort Title” you can edit in plex web so that you could for example have the display titles Alien, Aliens, Alien 3, Alien Resurrection, but with the sort titles Alien 1, Alien 2, Alien 3, Alien 4 to ensure they where in the correct order.
To enable automatic collection on new movies added go to Settings, Plex Media Server, Agents, Movies then find the The Movie Database agent and click on the gears icon, make sure Use collection info from The Movie Database is enabled
Oh man, I didn’t know that’s what it did! Whelp, time to go fix my Star Wars, Harry Potter, LOTR, etc. collections…
+1
Being able to group “collections” like Marvel Universe, DC Universe, Criterion Collection, James Bond under a “Collections” banner would be a really nice… and seemingly relatively simple addition.

@colintemp you have to “like” the original post in this thread to have your vote counted,
I don’t even know what to write… There are dozens of threads like this. On here, reddit, and certainly some other forums I don’t know about. And Plex seems to be simply ignorig us.
My moive folder is cluttered with banners of all the eight Harry Potter movies, Bond, Saw, Ice Age…
Basically what I want is simply to create some kind of folder, with a banner and a name and put all of the HP, LOTR, Bond, Saw, etc… movies inside this folder. I doesn’t even have to happen automatic, I’d gladly do this by hand. But this “collection” thing you implemented simply doesn’t cut it for me, and many other users as you can clearly see.
This is what my movie collection is looking like: http://i.imgur.com/ecyOlz1.png
This is how it could, if you finally implemented that feature: http://i.imgur.com/hlgEgVo.png
Before anyone asks, second picture is photoshopped. I stole the pictures form a reddit thread, user MrDevanWright.
(Sorry if I’m talking out of context to the ones above me, I just want to push this thread while hoping PleX will realize how important this is.)
