[implemented] Movie Collections

Why don’t we have nested collections?

Oh yeah. Because forum users are “<5% of the Plex user base” as one employee put it.

I came on the forums specifically to request this. Having collections which are able to be added directly to the main movies menu would make multi-cut movies like Blade Runner a lot simpler to view.

At this point perhaps should try posting to twitter and Facebook messenger? Maybe there will be more response that way? In general, I agree – it feels like the feedback on the forums really is not really valued or taken into account by Plex anymore.

I don’t even know what to write… There are dozens of threads like this. On here, reddit, and certainly some other forums I don’t know about. And Plex seems to be simply ignorig us.

My moive folder is cluttered with banners of all the eight Harry Potter movies, Bond, Saw, Ice Age…

Basically what I want is simply to create some kind of folder, with a banner and a name and put all of the HP, LOTR, Bond, Saw, etc… movies inside this folder. I doesn’t even have to happen automatic, I’d gladly do this by hand. But this “collection” thing you implemented simply doesn’t cut it for me, and many other users as you can clearly see.

This is what my movie collection is looking like: http://i.imgur.com/ecyOlz1.png
This is how it could, if you finally implemented that feature: http://i.imgur.com/hlgEgVo.png

Before anyone asks, second picture is photoshopped. I stole the pictures form a reddit thread, user MrDevanWright.

(Sorry if I’m talking out of context to the ones above me, I just want to push this thread while hoping PleX will realize how important this is.)

Yea that’s one way. I also like the mock ups this guy did: https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/152418/popular-collection-overhaul-ideas/p1

Maybe an option to turn collection view off/on or a list of collections that show up under the main library heading on the left. I think the collections should be distinguishable from other single movie posters by maybe making them appear as a stack or highlighting them in some other way.

Hopefully the reason this is taking so long is that the Plex UI team has something even better planned out.

Oh how I remember this request from years ago… … …

Actually, it’s not “A” plex employee that stated those of us on the forums represented less than 5% of the total Plex community. It was @elan himself that made this statement.

And he has made the statement several times on these forums.

Supposedly, there are no metrics to support the development of the feature, regardless of the fact you can’t gather negative metrics (Metrics that can’t exist for a feature that doesn’t exist to gather said metrics from.), the numbers of those that have requested said feature, nor the fact we were assured during a video conference that there would be some action taken on this feature.

It all comes down to Plex and the Team losing sight of what the users of the suite want to see. News feeds aren’t making Plex better… We KNOW what we want to make Plex a better product. I have stopped recommending it, unilaterally. There are alternatives out there, and given the numbers of issues Plex has “work arounds” for instead of total solutions for, some people might be better off with those alternatives. This request is just one of the issues… :frowning:

As far as those using the “official forums” representing less than 5%? Well, these are the folks that see issues, and go to the suggested avenue to either request or support the features that resolve those issues. Facebook nor Reddit have a link in the Support Pages, yet these forums do… https://www.plex.tv/support/

Whatever, @elan.

Adding ‘collection’ items to individual movie info screens was a nice touch, but, Plex, many of us don’t consider that finished, nor does it appear on all clients yet.
As for @“MikeG6.5”'s statement -
I know personally that if I stop using Plex as <5%, I take 17 with me to whatever product I’d go to.
I’d dare say that many other of us <5% are in the same boat - the majority of the shared accounts only exist because of one power user/server maintainer.

I’m not in any way trying to make threats here. I’m simply stating facts. 17 of my 20 shared friends exist only because they have access to my server. If I go, they go with me. They have no other reason not to (news with commercials doesn’t count)

@JamminR… i agree with you, i left Plex over 3 years ago and come back to see same issues hanging around … allowing users more control over there home page is well over time… shame to see.

it clear from 19pages and original post from 2013!!! that this is well over due.

Big deal. Plenty of their core stuff is still broken, going on 3-4 years now. Apparently they do not know how to fix the stuff.

Already found a problem with it. If you remove all the movies from a collection, the 0 item collection remains behind in your library with nothing in it.
I know this is beta, but really? Did they not even test the most basic functionality with this? :-1:

edit: Okay, I’m a dolt. I should have read the post as it shows how to delete 0 item collections. Carry on

That’s intentional. If you read the tips and tricks forum post I linked, you will see why. Just delete the collection if you don’t want it and it will remove the collection tag from the items and remove the collection

It’s only for the PlexWeb version, which does me no good. How soon until it gets rolled out to the installed server?

Sorry there no set time for that. But i will let the devs know folks are asking

Yeah, having the same issue. The Check Update button isn’t even clickable in order to update. Hope I can get this soon, pretty excited for it.

Make sure update channel is set to Beta. You can also just download it and install manually https://www.plex.tv/downloads/

Yup, def set to beta. Thanks for the link, think I’ll go that route. Happy holidays!

I downloaded the latest version from the website (1.11.xxx) but it failed on install. Hmmm.

Nice add to collections. My biggest gripe now is making the collections. Franchise-type collections are fairly easy with a few clicks, but the bigger value (IMO) in dealing with large collections is creating “lists” of movies like: All best picture winners; IMDB Top 250; etc and the only way to do that effectively is in some automated fashion. The Movie Database Collections are mostly garbage and worse, when you turn on the feature to “use collections from The Movie Database” ALL collections are downloaded.

@BigWheel - If I could narrow a request down to a single one it would be - Provide an option of logging into The Movie Database and only downloading collections associated with a user’s account. This would make these automated collections so much more useful.
