[Implemented] Multi User Mode

This and a server status page, or even just an API, would personally see as my highest priority issues thus far

+1 for me too

+1 or parental controls (better option for me).

+1 I have been requesting this for a very long time! I even have a lighthouse ticket for it:

https://plexapp.lighthouseapp.com/projects/14382/tickets/1168-multi-viewer-watch-status#ticket-1168-1

I really would like this feature - honestly it’s one of the only reasons I haven’t yet bought a Mac Mini (besides cost) to centralize the PMS/PMC experience on my TV (my gf and I have separate Plex servers on each of our laptops). Considering that the developers have chimed in on other popular threads, it would be great if they could chime in here (if I missed the post, I apologize).

However, what I haven’t seen is a good method of distinguishing the user at the TV. What I mean is, how is Plex supposed to know that it’s me watching, not my gf or (in the future) my kid? What if both my gf and I are watching together? How can this be implemented cleanly without adding extra clicks and requiring me to periodically correct mistakes (e.g. if my gf watches on my account).

One possibility is for Plex to add a prompt when you click play to verify that you’re the user watching and/or if other’s are watching with you (only appears if a server has multiple users). Unfortunately, it still adds an extra click before the content plays, which many might find inconvenient.

Alternatively, you could implement a simple shortcut to switch users (or add users as may be the case) during media browsing and/or watching. This might be the cleanest approach if our remotes weren’t already maxed out (I plan to use a wireless keyboard when I do get the Mac Mini but I’d imagine many users might want to use the simple Apple remote). This approach also greatly increases the chance that mistakes are made, e.g. my gf watches something but it logs on my account or I watch something with her, but then I leave and forget to switch users to just her. In the end, this could make this approach more annoying than useful.

Another approach might simply be separate libraries for different users (centralized metadata but separate watched/unwatched, user ratings/favorites, etc). This might clutter the main screen and/or add an extra click during browsing, but might be cleaner than other approaches. This might not work for multiple viewers, but since only the neurotic ones (like me) will care to maintain our watched/unwatched lists, those of us who do will mark items we watched later if necessary.

A final idea is to simply separate watched/unwatched icons for each user. For example, if I browse to a TV episode, maybe my unwatched icon will appear but not my gf’s. If viewing something together, after it is over I can update her unwatched icon to reflect that. Still might create problems where my unwatched icon gets updated when she is watching but not me.

Considering that TV viewing is passive entertainment, does anyone have any other ideas on a clean approach to implementing this? Hopefully the Plex team is implementing this as we speak and have come up with a great solution of their own, but just in case, this still might be a useful discussion.

+1 definitely.

Just to add a dissenting opinion, i could not care less about this feature. There are many more, much more interesting and useful features that could be developed.

It’s also not at all clear how to implement this elegantly.

My roommate and I are doing just fine without it. And the folks claiming they need it for their kids should avoid giving sole custody of their children to their television.

+1 - This needs to be added. A multi-user platform that doesn’t recognize multiple users? Seems kinda obvious.

Can’t properly explain how much I want this feature for my household.

Yes Multi user mode .. That would be sweet ..

+1 I don't honestly get how this hasn't been implemented ages ago.

It's a server <-> clients design, yet doesnt take into account if theres multiple clients with seperate users..

We want to do it right  it’s high on our priority list.

Thanks for the response elan, this is probably the highest thing on my wanted list. <3
