[Implemented] - Multiple Cuts Of Movie

+1

I’m looking for a solution for a long time now. I tried different workarounds but they didnt made me happy because I use plex on many devices and nothing worked on all of them. So I wait for a proper implemented solution.

Been looking for a solution to this for a long time, specially around Standard Editions & Extended Editions.

Currently Plex “Play Version” drop down only shows media info (Ie. 18.5Mbps, 1080p or 15.2Mbps, 1080p) even though the 18.5Mbps version is the extended version.

I know this is important to many, so I’m not proposing this gets removed but more of a settings option to choice between having text in the drop down menu vs having the media info (Ie. Extended, Standard). Or even better have a settings choice to be able to have both the media and text info (Ie. 18.5Mbps, 1080p - Extended / 15.2Mbps, 1080p - Standard).

I would assume this should be doable by having a specific text string within your file, for example:

[Standard] The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
[Extended] The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)

[Standard] Star Wars Episode IV A New Hope (1977)
[Despecialized] Star Wars Episode IV A New Hope (1977)

I’ve been able to get around this by creating separate files and locking the name and choosing a different match agent, however, this only limits you to 3 versions of a movie since there are only 3 choices for match agents.

Would be great for devs to prioritize this

Thanks!!!

+1 for me - Maybe anything contained within square brackets could be displayed as a “version”?

Star Wars Episode IV.mkv <- Default option
Star Wars Episode IV [Special Edition].mkv
Star Wars Episode IV [Despecialized Edition].mkv
Star Wars Episode IV [4K77 Edition].mkv

NOOOO!!! But no. The brackets [] already have a purpose within Plex. They are ignored. To change that now would completely ‘break’ peoples’s files.

Subfolders with a -cut tag are about the only method I could imagine that would get everything to work right and still be flexible enough to custom name the cut.

+1 here

Well we absolutely need that! Just took my Vote from something else to put it here..
Why in the hell is there a dropdown which is called “Video” if you cant use it??

I think we need 4 things to config befor starting a Movie!

1.) Film Edition (which have to be different Video Editions)
2.) Video Source (Same Edition but other Video-Quality Level)
3.) Audio Source (Same Edition but other Audio-Quality Level)
4.) Sub Source (Same Edition but other Subtitles)

Just like this it makes sence.
Examples

1.)
Standard
Extended
Directors Cut
Cinema Edition
3D SBS
3D HOU
2.)
2160p HFR
1440p HFR
1080p HFR
720p HFR
2160p
1440p
1080p
720p
3.)
Englisch (DTS-HD MA 7.1) @4.151 kb/s
Englisch (DTS-HD MA 5.1) @1.509 kb/s
German (DTS-HD MA 7.1) @4.151 kb/s
German (DTS-HD MA 5.1) @1.509 kb/s
4.)
Englisch Forced (PGS)
Englisch Forced (SRT)
German Forced (PGS)
German Forced (SRT)

In my Example even 3D Editions are different Editions as you can have them as different sources.
Let me explain:

everything that gets released on a BD/DVD is a different Edition. I never saw a 4K movie getting released as 1080p (as long as it wasnt a 1080p and gets re-released as 4K)
Also there are seperate BDs for Extended Cut, 3D SBS etc etc

So we need first to choose which Edition then the quality settings.

ALL of these setting I would love to choose like I can choose Audio & Subtitles now:

That would be awesome. Then you can start with the Edtion, Quality, Language and Subtitles you want to start!
Now it is pretty sh-itty

…just my 2cents

+1 this would be great

it would be nice that once you press play on the client it lists the different versions (i.e. Directors cut, NOIR, Theatrical, etc)

How has this not been added yet… I’ve literally been watching for someone at Plex to acknowledge the suggestion for years at this point.

unfortunately suggestions are just that… there really is no weight to are votes other than to show the dev who swings by what is currently hot topic

Has anyone made the suggestion of simply displaying the file name in the “Play Version” window instead of or as well as the resolution and bit rate?

Yeah, I would even settle for codec, dimensions, and container.

This be good.

That still wouldn’t tell the directors or unrated versions

There’s a separate feature suggestion for that.

As @nydave69 says… that’s slightly different from what this feature suggestion is about.
The Play Version feature as implemented at the moment (and suggested in that other thread) is focusing on different quality versions of the same video, while this thread is about having a single record for 1 movie and it’s various versions/editions/cuts (such as e.g. theatrical version vs. director’s cut vs. …)

Someone had the same idea.

No it wouldn’t…

With enough information displayed, the mockup pictured here would essentially solve both topics.

It would if that information was contained in the file name.
I don’t know about anyone else but my files would have something like [Directors Cut] [Unrated] [Extended]… in the name.
It seems that what is being requested here is to have PLEX parse the data on the run time of a file to match to whatever cut, and I imagine that would be difficult also would not help for files such as 35mm restored Star Wars vs the BR, DVD, etc.
I guess I’ll go vote for the More info in “Play Version” instead

Thanks for the heads up tom80H.

my file names do have the Directors Cut, Unrated in the file name.
That’s how I can create a different movie for each, then it shows up, and one can select the one they want, not the ideal setup but its a work around.

I find using the media type is some what useless since any file format can be written to any of those media devices… I had bluerays with very old movies that had a resolution of only 240…

but what I can’t understand is that if Plex is a media organizer it does a poor job of it…
in that aspect i think it ranks at the bottom of the list. For that I use Tiny Media Manager and it has all the options one needs to organize movie and TV media. Plex was the best when it first started out, but they let the core of the product slide.

I just use Plex now to share my media till a better option comes along.

This is such a simple yet frustrating issue. So many films have been recut and re-released with different versions. Star Wars is one of the greatest examples. I want the default selection for Episode IV to be the original, but I also want the option of being able to select any of the other releases or fan edits–there’s no way to do either at the moment.
