This is a bloody annoying issue for sure - and seems to be easily fixed by just displaying the filename in the versions selector! That’s a trivial change and a good start to solve 99% of peoples issues.
It boggles the mind that 7 years later (almost) and this isn’t even remotely a thing, especially nowadays with the exploson of extra unrated directors final black and chrome and noir cuts
+1
Seems like all they care about are features that might bring in revenue.
They let the core slide to the point it almost useless, It seems like they chopped up the software to the point that they can’t even get an update out that doesn’t break something.
I use Tiny Media Manager (no I have nothing to do with that software, other then it works and I like it) as my media manager, it has all the options I need.
Which I could +1 this more.
This has been needed for years now.
So, you can now accomplish this by doing the following:
Split Apart>Rename Accordingly>Add Both to Apocalypse Now Collection
Just make sure you have “Group Collections” and “Hide movies in collections”
Just got gifted a set of Nightmare on Elm Street movies that drive this feature home.
Each one is dual-aspect: a full-frame cut with content beyond the cinema scope, and a theatrical (technically “cropped”) version. I want them both in my library, but they rip at the same resolution to similar file sizes, so figuring out which one’s which is next to impossible. If I split them apart, the exact same movie is appearing in my library twice, which clutters it up pretty quickly for an eight-film collection. And even if I do split them, I have to figure out which one is full-frame and rename the title. And because these movies are already part of a set, the “add them to a collection for just that film” workaround doesn’t do much.
Plex already lets me choose between multiple versions of a movie. I feel that adding some form of descriptive text isn’t too much to ask, especially for an issue that has had lots of support over the past seven years.
Doesn’t help if you’re already using collections like normal. I don’t want the movies in my “Christmas” collection to disappear just because I have multiple cuts of Stargate.
They won’t disappear, it removes them from outside of the collection, but maintains them inside the collection.
That’s removing them from the normal library though. I still need to be able to find Home Alone under “H,” not just in my Christmas collection.
Sure, in that case you could just not “Hide movies in collections”. I choose to hide mine since I don’t have custom collections like “Christmas” I use Genre’s for that
Christmas Movies is the one genre where I use a completely separate library.
Yeah but then the actual collections show up in the library alongside normal movies and fake multi-cut collections for a single movie. I also don’t want “Christmas” or “Marvel Cinematic Universe” to appear as individual films in my library. There is already a Collections tab for them.
The solution here is to just let us label the different cuts of a movie. Your collections hack is only clean if you weren’t already using collections for their intended purpose.
Different strokes for different folks man… I DO use collections for their INTENDED purpose, which is keeping all of the Harry Potter movies together, or keeping all of the Fast and Furious Movies together… And I hide the items that are in collections based on that mantra, I don’t need all the Harry Potter movies out in the Open when there’s obviously a collection for them… Nearly every franchise is a collection, I don’t go out and make other collections that are user curated collections, like Christmas… So I don’t run the risk of Home Alone being in the Christmas Collection and not out in the open, it’s in the Home Alone Collection where it should be, or, since the other movies were garbage, I just removed it from all collections… As I said, I use Genre’s for christmas and stuff like that, that way I can just filter to Genre’s…
For Babes in Toyland though I did make a custom Collection, I have both a Colorized version and the Black and White version, I split them apart, named one Babes in Toyland - Color, and the other Babes in Toyland - B&W, and made a collection for “Babes in Toyland”. Which both of them now sit in.
The other way you can do it is by placing a -TagHere at the end of it (DirectorsCut, Color, etc) and when you select which version you’d like to play you select accordingly. This however means you would have to keep track of all of your movies you have multiple streams for, as most clients don’t show you have Duplicates…
@JasonNalley - How do you handle multiple cuts of something like Star Wars or Empire Strikes Back? Or do you not have multiple cuts of those? Plex doesn’t support Collections within collections does it?
No, it does not, so inside the “Star Wars” Collection, I have 2 of each of the originals, because those are the only ones I have multiple cuts of. They’re just named differently A New Hope: Original and A New Hope: Remaster. Since there’s only 8 movies/11 cuts in there, having the Extra 3 Duplictates isn’t a big deal… Solo, and Rogue One are separate from this group in my library, though even if they were there, it wouldn’t be bad either…
I REALLY hope this feature gets implemented! I tried running with this solution for a while and ultimately gave up because it was frustrating:
When PMS detects multiple cuts of the same movie as the same and merges them, i split them apart, rename the title to include DC, SE, etc, and even assign them different artwork.
This worked but the only frustrating part was playback/resume/watched or unwatched. PMS basically thinks that they’re all the same movie so If you watch one, then PMS marked the other(s) as watched. Same thing for in progress movies. All versions will show that they are in progress.
If anyone see’s another post about this elsewhere lets get them over here to vote on this feature!!
This has been here since 2012…
Most I think have used up their votes, and since not many voted on features are implemented the votes are all locked up.
I still think they need to up the limit or remove it completely. I have unvoted for some feature requests that I still want to see, but I’m just assuming 5-6 year old feature requests may never happen so I’d rather vote for something that seems to have the developers interest like the new-ish request for adding “TV Everywhere” to the DVR system.
I know a lot who have done just that, but then the ones who were around longer and had high vote counts loose them…
Actually it most likely doesn’t mater how many votes a feature has or how long users have wanted it.
It’s what the developers want that counts not what the users want, look at all the online features added, what was there vote count…
This is the One of those rare easy to implement features for the devs that would be a big nod back to us OG Plex members who now complain that Plex doesn’t care about us and only implements features we don’t want that will help them profit… you know I’m talking about tidal
Personally I want my family to be able to tell quickly at a glance which version of Star Wars on my server shows Han shooting first!
