That’s what I would like to see implemented too.
What does that mean?
Do they have to exist in separate folders for this to work? Currently all of my duplicate movies reside in the same folders as their counterparts. Version selecting works, but I’d prefer some manner of dropdown on the main screen to select before hitting play.
It would be nice to know the version I’m getting, rather than to have to sleuth it out based on bitrate and resolution.
It means what it says. You see one version of the film in your library and within that, there are the options to select the different cuts.
For example, I have some HK films that I have 3 cuts for. I only want to see the main film title (let’s say Armour of God) appear once in my library. Only when I click into the film details should I see (again for example) the HK Cut, the International Cut and the Taiwanese Cut as options for playback.
Exactly that^ ![]()
Yep. That is what I figured. Version might be the wrong term though since Plex already presents a single title when multiple versions are available. They seem to want to call different resolutions of the same exact cut as a different version.
Hopefully they don’t expect us to split multiple cuts into different library items before they show up as alternate cuts under each individual listing.
Splitting them up is exactly how it works. If the movies are merged = different version, if they are split but have the same movie ID = different EDITION.
It’s okay, considering the history of this topic, but different editions still use the same meta-data including played/play progress etc. That’s just stupid on so many levels… As a huge Apocalypse Now fan, I’m annoyed…
There used to be a way to get that to work without them being linked, if you unmatched one after you split then manually matched it with the other Agent (TVdb | TMdb) but now that there isn’t a way to use any but the one Agent so I think the only way would be to unmatch 1 & enter all the Metadata manually
What big problems does it have more than other movies?
I think Apocalypse Now has 4 cuts out there or something.
Yup, I have 6 versions, 3 different playing lenghts, but I could have used Blade Runner as a better example I guess:
Workprint Prototype Version (not the same as Workprint Edition)
San Diego Sneak Preview Version
US Theatrical
International Theatrical
US Broadcast version
Director’s Cut
The Final Cut
Electric Unicorn Fan Edit
NEXUS 6 Extended Cut
Workprint Edition
So… there’s that…
I could have used Blade Runner as a better example I guess
Yeah that’s a lot. From the way you said it I thought there was something extra about Apocalypse Now that made it extra important. But it was just the one you most want. But man, Blade Runner looks crazy. I know my Dad was a fan, & I remember watching it as a kid, & my Dad had a VHS of I think the Director’s Cut, but now I’m not sure since there are so many
Indeed, when it comes to different versions of a movie, Blade Runner was my first thought.
But ofc not only movies need that feature. TV Shows can also have multiple cuts and editions of seasons and episodes. At Doctor Who, even the “not lost” episodes have omnibus editions and studio recording versions etc. At the “lost episodes” it is even more, there you have “color animated editions”, “bw animated editions”, “telesnap restoration” and audio with or without narration. All of the same episode ofc.
And ofc the identification of the different versions must be possible with local metadata, not some stupid internet database.
And ofc the identification of the different versions must be possible with local metadata, not some stupid internet database.
This seems to be how Emby does it for movies and TV. For movies it takes whatever comes after the Movie Name (YEAR) and sticks it into a dropdown box and sorted by modified date or time added to the database or something.

TV episodes are just the whole file name.
It is elegant how they handle it.
I wouldn’t say that’s very elegant, but it’s better than nothing. My only wish is that if and when Plex finally put forward its implementation, it won’t be this kind of patch work, something truly worth this 10 year wait.
An interesting appearance in the latest (Web Version 4.87.2)
I have a Plex Pass, but it won’t let me access it
I just checked & I don’t see it. I checked & it said I’m on 4.87.2. Tried in multiple libraries with multiple movies, including ones I know have multiple editions for & ones that Have 2 or 3 different Play Version of. Refreshed metadata, scanned library, Plex Danced, nothing I have done made this visible
I have it. I also updated to the latest PMS Preview today.
updated to the latest PMS Preview
That makes more sense. I use the Public release of PMS
The hosted version of Plex Web is always up to date. The version included with PMS generally isn’t.
I have Plex Pass and still couldn’t edit that field whether the films were merged or split apart!
