+1 Yes I would like this to be part of the Plex, I would be even ok If I would have to edit each version manualy.

Please implement this
+1 for me as well. This would be a GREAT addition!!!
+1 This feature would be great.
+1 Yes, please!
+1 I would like this as well.
i would find this really useful especially for the shorts and bonus materials
+1 Run into this issue all of the time. LOTR, Hobbit, Avatar, Aliens Anthology. Would love to see these different versions handled differently!
+1 Yes, yes and yes please!!
I’m on the band wagon for wanting this also!

I have both 2D and 3D versions of a number of different movies. Both are 1080p. Unless I split up each movie, rename the 3D versions, and manually give them different poster art there is no way at all to tell which one is which within Plex. I select the movie, let's say Toy Story for instance, and I'm given two identical choices to play by Plex even though one is 2D and the other is 3D, and that is clearly stated in their file names. It's now a 50/50 chance whether I'll choose the correct one I want to see. It gets worse if I add a directors cut or bonus content from the BD. This whole mess is then compounded when using a Roku as a client, because you're not given a choice as to which version you want to gamble on. The Roku chooses for you, usually based upon resolution with the highest resolution normally getting the nod, but what if they're all the same resolution?
So PLEASE give us a submenu with meaningful descriptions if there are multiple versions of the same movie for us to choose from, and PLEASE make sure that this functionality is duplicated on the Roku and other mobile clients.
+1 for sure ! (especially for distinguishing between 2D & 3D versions of the same movie).
I was just wondering. This thread is pretty old and been "very popular" for a long time. Is this feature on some "todo"-list? Can one take a part of that sort of list? (sound like a pirate). Would be nice to know if we're just dreaming or can actually expect such feature in a near future (I know it's on a wanted list, but is there a list over features to be done).
If it's hard to do it automatically I would be happy with a feature that made it possible to group manually from Plex web B)
I think this feature is enabled now? I had some duplicated files for some movies and in plex I have a small number on the cover telling me how many different files I have (like unseen episode for series) and when I clikc on the movie it is asking me which version I want to use using filename I believe.
Can you check if it works and if so can you please close this thread?
Thank you.
This thread isn't just pretty old... it was the very first thread in this Plex Pass Feature Requests section :).

You can only tell things apart by resolution, I think. What's needed in addition is a way to label different versions as others have described above. There is still a very strong need for this.
There are a few criteria by which one could have duplicates: resolution, 3D, director's, unedited/explicit, etc. That makes it tricky from a UI perspective to display the options in a consolidated way. I think what makes the most sense is a table of versions/cuts, where the columns are the content categories (also known as cuts, such as director's or explicit), only the columns with existing versions will be shown, and the entries in each column define the quality of the content (resolution, 3d/2d, etc). The table could be shown where the existing format is displayed, allowing you to select individual versions of the media, or it could pop up when you hit the Play button, allowing you to choose at that point.
Let's talk about how that would look in various scenarios with the example movie Avatar:
Just a 1080p BluRay rip of Avatar
This would display like it does today. The quality tags would be visible on the screen like normal, and hitting play will simply play the only version available.
1080p and 720p versions of Avatar
This would also work like it does today. Hitting play would pop up with a selection of which quality you want to stream. Since the content is the same, Plex wouldn't make any distinction or assumption of the version, and thus wouldn't display Original, Director's Cut, or any of that.
Original and Director's cuts of Avatar in 1080p 5.1 Surround
Here's where things get interesting. Hitting play would bring up a selection screen, but this time in table format. Two columns titled Original and Director's would each have a single entry called 1080p, 5.1 or something like that.
Original and Director's cuts of Avatar in 1080p and 720p 5.1 Surround
This would work just like the last section, except each column would have two entries, one for 1080p, 5.1, and one for 720p, 5.1.
Mixing up various audio and video resolutions between cuts
If you had multiple versions of the Original and Director's cuts, you would still have two columns, with each entry listing its video and audio details, like so:
Original Director's
720p, 5.1 720p, 2.1
1080p, 5.1 1080p, 5.1
1080p, 3D, 5.1 1080p, 3D, 7.1
This may end up being too complex for how rare multiple cuts really are, anyway, so perhaps keeping a single list view of cut names with audio/video quality "badges" next to each entry is the better option.
Personally I’d also use this feature to group extras with a film so when you hit play, one of the “cuts” would be, say, deleted scenes. It seems like a versatile grouping feature would have a multitude of applications.
Hmmm… Except that there could be a few of them, so they really need to be off on a submenu, and then we’re halfway towards creating DVD style navigation for streamed sources! Perhaps that’s a bit ambitious for v1
Still, +1 for the concept.
In fact, it would be very interesting to see the exact same (similar?) codind as for theTV Shows, just changing the "parsing" of the file names, the first part beeing the movie name, and the second the attached description. So the same movie could just appears one time at the upper level menu.
Possible ?
