[Implemented] Official Plex App for LG WebOS Smart TVs

+1

It’s here! Confirmed 16th Feb 2015:

https://forums.plex.tv/topic/147094-official-plex-lg-smart-tv-has-arrived/

EDIT: There is still some confusion as to which TVs are compatible. Quote from Plex Employee: “we ourselves haven’t been provided a list of supported models from LG”.

EDIT 2: It would appear that the official app for LG Smart TVs is currently only compatible with 2013 Netcast devices. Let’s hope that compatibility expands sometime soon!

EDIT 3: The App is now available on WebOS 1.x devices - there are a few bugs and teething problems but it’s here! WebOS 2.0 currently unsupported with no official information on future support.

It seems that the app on the LG App Store is not compatible with WebOS sets. It should probably be removed as an "answer" to this thread.

I agree if it's not compatible with 2011 and 2012 models it can't be "here"... Thank you for your research though

I'm hearing contradictory things... If it's not compatible with 2011/12 sets (which are not based on WebOS!) but is also not compatible with WebOS devices, I'm not exactly sure what it IS compatible with. Regardless, I'll remove the 'solved' tag until the matter is cleared up.

So, it seems that the official client arrived on WebOS TV's also...

It looks like the app has been updated to support WebOS devices (with a few kinks) so you can mark this solved!

Doesn't look like it supports WebOS 2.0 devices yet. At least, my new TV (55UF950T), isn't supported yet.

Thanks for the info... I always assumed webOS 2.0 would support all original webOS apps, but I guess not!

Off topic: how are you finding the TV and OS? I'm looking at the OLED equivalent with some envy!

Sorry, I didn't see this till now. So far really liking it. Great sound, decent picture. I was also thinking about the OLED but I don't want a curved screen. This TV seemed the best LG as far as quality and colour are concerned, OLED aside.

The LG App needs work can't play most of my Library!

Keep up the good work!

I like the look of the official app but it is usless as it is even with Plex Pass.

LG has a golden fish in their hands and it's slipping out. Not sure if the issue is, hardware, SDK, or what. But WebOS 2.0 has potential. Other than built in apps, like Netflix, Hulu and Amazon there is nothing of value in their app store. If they would support and work with Plex on app development they would generate more sales. Have been using the built in Web browser to use Plex, but playback is nothing like direct media play via the TV file browser. The web browser interface runs like a charm, now if it could only play movies in full quality that would be nice.  In my limited testing it seems that LG subtitle support in direct play is limited. So perhaps this is the issue? Plex, please push for the app with direct play to take full advantage of TV hardware. And please don't force people to buy a subscription. Most people would probably buy one on good faith anyway.

Please support webos 2.0. the Playz app is terrible and should not be associated with plex. using the browser seems to work decent enough but nothing beats a native app. Is it in the works or are we just going to have to get used to the current set up?

I cannot imagine that the lack of support for WebOS 2.0 is caused by any problems at Plex’s end. If the app can run on 1.x it should surely not have any major technical issues with 2.0. From what I’ve heard, the whole LG Store approval process is extremely over-complicated and convoluted, and apparently their communication with developers is no better.

Was more just wondering whether it was being worked on rather than having a dig at their process. For all of the hype that webos 2.0 has, its app store is underwhelming.

The LG approval and dev support department must be outsourced. Based on the crap collection of apps in their store, it must be based in North Korea or China or Russia. At this point I don’t blame Plex. But I wish Plex would be a little more open in terms of what they plan to do. I know they probably don’t want to burn bridges by downtalking LG , but they should at least tell us what is going on. I have already moved on to the Amazon Fire 4k for Plex app support. Roku 4k is next option, with a distant 3rd being Nvidia Shield. If you don’t care about 4k then apple tv? Otherwise you can use the built in web browser to access the plex server website, this works good too.

Oh another 3rd party app is now out for WebOS 2.0. Xplay. Just got released today. Plex? Any update on official app?

The only thing I’m bothered about at the moment is the fact that the app card colour doesn’t match the Plex logo and looks totally out of place amongst the likes of Netflix, Amazon Prime etc. @-)
