[Implemented] Please display Swiss German (gsw) in the audio track

There are a lot of movies in Switzerland in swiss german, which is quite different to german. There is a special language tag “gsw” for it, but Plex doesn’t understand it. Could you add this feature for all the Plex fans living in Switzerland?

Your post got me curious, as gsw is a valid ISO 639-2/B language code.

I think this is what is happening:

  • Plex Media Server, PMS, supports both ISO 639-1 (2 letter) and ISO 639-2/B (three letter) language codes.
Reference: Adding Local Subtitles to Your Media
  • However, PMS only supports 639-2/B codes that have a corresponding 639-1 code.
  • Therefore, even though gsw is a valid 639-2/B code, PMS does not support it as there is no corresponding 639-1 code.

I’ve no idea what would be required for Plex to add support for the full set of 639-2/B codes (I’m not a software developer). Someone from Plex will have to provide that information.

In the meantime, as an admittedly very ugly workaround, you could use a language code from one of the constructed or ancient languages that are rather unlikely to show up in your Plex libraries (ex: vol for Volapük). If/when Plex adds support for gsw, you can filter your Plex libraries by subtitle language to identify which media to update.

Just catching up on this…
I’ve copied a file of mine and changed the audio track language to gsw using MKVToolnix. After adding the file to Plex, it’s showing up as “Swiss German” in Plex Web.

To be perfectly honest, this didn’t work when I edited the track language using Subler (Mac editor). Not yet sure if this is about how the app writes the language code into the container – though it appears that Plex is capable of dealing with it ok.

Thanks, I tested by myself and still see GSW. Now I found the reason:
I switched the Web to english and see “Swiss German”. Then I switched back to german and then it only shows “gsw”. So this is just not translated.
It would make sense to have it in the german interface too, since most with Swiss German movies use the german language for the interface.
How can we get this translated? The correct translation in German is “Schweizerdeutsch”.

Thanks for sharing. Got it and will ask about it.

Follow-up question… with what version of PMS /Plex Web are you seeing that? From what I’ve learned, there should be some updates with PMS 1.24.0

I see it with Plex Web 4.63.0 on app.plex.tv. But my Server is still on 1.23.6.4881.
Are the translations on the PMS and not on Plex Web?

It’s probably a mix. The technical details and their localized representation should be provided by the server (including track language information)

PMS 1.24 was rolled out today to public, I upgraded it and now it works! Thanks a lot for your support!
