A massive +1 for me. Went on a trip a few weeks back soon after getting Plex Pass, without realizing that Gigabytes of data was transcoded but never synced after my iPad went to sleep by itself during the process. That was a LONG flight. :( :( :( :(

It has been a loooooong time since a Dev has commented on this thread. Any feedback? Good or bad, just feedback pls.
We all understand that there is work involved in developing background sync for iOS. But the existing investment made by devs in developing Sync should be considered wasted - it is not fit-for-purpose if we have to babysit plex for hours before a trip. The vast majority of customers will not be bothered with this.
I love Plex and bought a lifetime plexpass as soon as I read about the sync function.
But sync on iOS is in practice not real usefull without background sync. Pls consider promoting this up the backlog! Feedback pls!

Like many others, I've been burned by this in the past. Would love to see better background sync support in the iOS apps.
This is something we'd love to add, but unfortunately it's not that simple.
iOS 7's background mode that'd allow syncing only gives the app 30 seconds maximum to figure out what needs to be downloaded. This is totally incompatible with the way syncing was designed (before we knew how iOS 7 behaved). It'd require significant changes to the whole process, both on the server and in the iOS app, to fit within that limit.
I'm not saying it'll never happen - we agree it'd be a great addition - but it's not something simple that can be changed in the iOS app; it requires an almost from-scratch rewrite of the sync system.
I don't think people see it as something simple, background sync is a huge bonus to UX of a great app, so its warranted. 30 seconds is loads of time for an app to get a payload of what it needs to download later, you're only talking a few kb of data.
Anyways, it's many months later -what's the latest here? Rewriting the bg sync should be a high priority for the paying customers. no?
Shouldn't this post be tagged as Popular with nearly 200 likes?
For jailbroken devices there is a cydia tweak which enables full backgrounding for movie box. If this can be done for movie box then it should be easy to implement for plex as well.
I found the "movie box 3 complete" tweak in the dtathemes repo in cydia
works perfectly
could you publish a cydia tweak which enables background syncing using plex for those of us with jailbroken devices?
+1 for background sync on iPad.
Even though I left the plex app open over night and plugged into power, it went to sleep. What about adding a setting that would prevent iPad from going to sleep if on AC power while Syncing?
if jailbroken you could use caffeine found in cydia. that would prevent your iPad from going to sleep while plex is open
+1 for real background sync

I'd say this is a 'Minimum Viable Product' feature for the Plex app these days, with the size of even transcoded HD movies/episodes. It's stupid that your iPad becomes a paperweight for hours just to allow sync's to happen!
Looks more than possible using Apple's API's as discussed here by Faux: https://forums.plex.tv/topic/96730-ios-background-sync/#entry853255
Please!! Can this feature be prioritised! Seems like a no-brainer, especially since plex is all about user experience!
I have PlexPass for life...but i just dont use sync because of this issue.
Please fix this background sync issue.

I recently bought the IOS app for the GF specifically to sync some of her shows for an up comming trip
I assumed this feature was already implemented. I was really disappointed to see her files weren't syncing automatically
