[Implemented] Trailer Support

+1 for trailers.

+1 for trailers

aslong as it is with local support, I live in a area where streaming trailers is not a option because of slow connections.

how is still not in plex

how is still not in plex

Let me answer with a link to a post I made awhile back when someone asked basically the same thing but regarding another feature:

https://forums.plex.tv/topic/81866-this-thing-has-no-playlist-support/?p=651495

+1 x infinity..

I love this idea and to me is the on leg up XBMC has on plex. Im in the same boat as a lot of people ~1400 movies and i forget what some of them are about a trailer would be nice before i start the movie.

Also i would use trailers as sort of a wish list. Pull the trailers and store them locally for movies i want to see / purchase.

+1 for trailer support also... its the biggest thing I miss from XBMC... so handy. Just use Youtube in the same way.

Hi Atrus,

I understand what you are saying... wait for it..... BUT, looking in the forums of what users are asking for this feature does seem to be very high (if not the most highly requested) feature . XBMC already have support and I'm no programmer (unfortunately else I would definitely volunteer to see how I could help) but I'm sure some of the code could be used from XBMC to help get things moving?

Even a basic implementation to start with of either online streaming OR local file trailer support only to start with I'm sure would be greatly received and appreciated by many.

As mentioned before any users that do use the web client you can look at installing the following addon that moussa.uk made (I personally think it's fantastic!)

https://forums.plex.tv/topic/99209-transmogrify-for-plex-a-browser-extension-that-adds-features-to-plexweb/

I unfortunately don't/can't use the web interface much as I run it as a media centre via remote control and it does not work well in this environment but this kind of support in the native app would be fantastic to see some time in the near future :-)

Plex is doing a great job all round I just hope this feature is getting close to the top of their list of things to do internally :-D  (Fingers crossed for us all)

No code at all can be used from XBMC. The reason for that is that PHT is the only client that has its foundation from the XBMC project, and making trailer works only for one of all 10 (?) clients would not be cost efficient. And it would be frustrating. Why make a trailer solution for PHT which will be dead and gone when the big solution is in place? The one that all clients can use.

It is hard to explain when I can't tell you everything. Just trust me. It will be worth the wait.

I think the concern/disappointment is the prioritization and the seemingly non-genuine nature of this part of the forum..  Why have feature/bug voting if you're not going to address the things with the most votes in a remotely timely manner?  I had a choice between life-time plexpass or yearly.  I specifically chose yearly because I genuinely don't mind paying that amount every year to support the plex team and the features I get with that subscription (which supposedly includes feature voting).

This request goes back to 2012, not last month.  There are ramblings about wanting this feature going back to at least 2009 in the forums from just a quick search.

The "we have a lot to do" excuse is just that.  Especially considering all of the things that came up AFTER trailer support was being requested.  It's not a solid reason as to why the request has seemingly been ignored or put on the back burner for so long.

I looked over the items you listed in the other thread.  I'd love to see the list you made posted so that each item could be voted on and then see where the people here rank those things.

When you tell people to be patient about an issue/feature that has been brought up many times and heavily backed for YEARS... it's a bit silly.  Just be straight up and say that it doesn't carry the same priority for plex developers that it does for users.

At this point, my view on the voting forum is that it's complete bullshit.  I love plex, it's a great product. This is just one aspect of the community, and doesn't bring down the product as a whole too much.  But it is one of the supposed features I'm paying for.  And I'm going to call a spade a spade.  I wish Plex and the Plex ninjas would do the same.  Either give more priority to what people are actually voting on, or simply don't use the voting system at all.  That's OK. I like the option of voting.  But it's just bullshit if it's not leading to results and I'm being sold something that really only exists on paper at that point.

If people at Plex feel my assessment that the voting here doesn't really matter isn't accurate, then what I'm saying is that the actions of the Plex team do not seem to reflect their intent.  And if they do really want to meet the needs and desires of their users/supporters, maybe they should step back and ask if they're really doing that at this point or if they're beginning to dictate what users need/want for them.

I'd love to see 4-5 clients that knock it out of the damn park rather than 10 that are as good as we can get for now because there's just so much work to do for each of them.  Plex, in general, is good enough that it could dictate what $50-150 device I buy/use.  Stop trying to please everyone and being available everywhere, and focus on making a few really stellar clients.

It's kind of interesting, and telling, when a user made client on one of the most widely used platforms is notably better than the official client for that platform.

A few personal reflections from reading your post:

* That last comment is interesting. Which client and platform are you referring to?

* Why are you saying that nothing comes out of this sub forum? You must be aware of all the feature requests that has been developed and released already.  A tip: Your valid points will come out as stronger and hit harder if you do not "spread misinformation".

* Why would you rather have no way to get visibility out about what you as a user want? Isn't it better to have a place were you can see "Yeah there are many that agrees with me, and now I know the Plex devs know about the request". *I* see it as a huge privilege that a company has a place were I know that they will know about my views on what features should be added. I know of no other company that actually reads through and acknowledge feature request on this level. Besides support personel at certain companies that say things they read of a prompter when you call in or email. Here actual developers read what you write. Guaranteed. If your thread gets popular enough, get enough votes. How do I know? Well I am one of them that actually lets the devs know when a thread gets popular status. Besides the fact that I know the guys visit this subforum from time to time. Even to answer questions some times even if this is not the place for it. If you do not trust me: Why would I have made two feature requests myself if I knew that no one cares about what is written in this sub forum?

* I do not know how Plex Inc. can make it more clear that this is a feature voting subforum. Not a subforum were the users will be deciding what the Plex Inc. devs will add.

* I agree about the number of clients. I would like them to only work on the clients I use (of course). Nothing else. Unfortunately that is a business decision that has to do with getting enough money in so they can hire more people to add features that we as users hopefully find interesting and usable. The bigger the userbase, the more stable the business gets. I know that one argument can be that one might get big enough userbase by focusing all on just for example two clients. Personally I do not agree, but the argument can be held.

* I think gathering a list (in the style that I made, but with better descriptions) and letting people vote on it might be good and informative. I might present that to team. Do you have a good idea on how it should be presented? How many votes per person? Should it only be for Plex pass members? And were should it be placed to get most votes and traction?

The only reason why I might be against it is that it would still only contain things that the devs already know about. And these feature requests have been voted on quite heavily already. Would it fill enough of a value to actually put down quite a lot of time in it? Maybe. It would not hurt I believe.

If you want, PM me with your suggestions regarding that. We should really keep these feature request threads as clean as we can. Which is hard enough without us doing what we do now :)

A few personal reflections from reading your post:

What a fantastic, level-headed and self-restrained reply.

Thanks. Let's hope it holds for a few pages before people begin bumping and threatening again.

Just to chime in quickly: we (developers and employees) read these forums, and we understand loudly and clearly that people want trailer support. So please don't feel like your voice isn't being heard. But remember there are a lot of voices, some of them quite loud, and lots voices wanting lots of different things, as well as inescapable business priorities.

So we can't please all the people ever, and sometimes it takes us a while to please some of the people, but we absolutely love making our users happy, and we'll continue working hard to do just that :)

Oooh, drama!  B)

Sorry just have to chime in.. Add to the drama.. :)

I'm a programer as well and i have to balance the needs of my users with my needs as the developer. Sometimes people want something that seems simple enough but because of the way the base system has been written is impossible, or would cause a major re-write. an example i can think of is one of my users wants the calendar (i write a scheduling, invoicing, and inventory system for my job) to have a public view that shows whos on shift and what skills they may have that patrons could utilize. they also wanted to patrons to have the availability to schedule consultations with those employees.. Simple hu?? the calendar is there the schedule is there? just make another view.. the issue is that this small request would require an addition of user metatdata, changing the security system, extending the email system for notifications and a slew of other things that are hidden in the base of the system that normal users never see.. the other side of this is only one of the 10 locations want this feature so is it worth my time as a programer?? A simple addition of a windows 8 interface took 2 months of work to implement because I had to extend the base code to allow for the API calls.

-- End my rant as a programer..

As a user of PLEX the main reason i got PLEX and not moved to anything else is its stability, easy of use and all the platforms it supports.. My server is linux, my phone is android and my brother-in-laws phone is iOs.. We all use chromecasts which PLEX is the only system that supports smoothly.. The PLEX staff have managed to continue to add features without breaking the base system, which in its self is a gold star in my book.. Yes there has been the addition of features that i don't use, or that i feel are trivial but that is my view on them.. Yes i would love to have trailer feature added, as well as a slue of other features..  All that being said i understand the flip side of the coin and that we don't see everything that is the developers plate and sometime the simple feature everyone ones just isn't doable at that point and time.

Side suggestion.. It may be easier for you, the developers, to use polling software instead of forums for feature requests..

With the possibility to choose the language of trailers.

Exemple my synopsis are all in english and my girl friend doesn't read english very well, so i would like to choose french trailers for her.
