Whilst I understand what you are saying I politely disagree though I am not privy to your internal reviews or metrics. However, there is no universe in which the sample examples presented such as vlc, mxplayer, mpv, bsplayer inclusive of their ‘faults’ is worse than the outdated plex player or exoplayer in general for that matter. There is almost nothing those players won’t play. Using the absolute latest exoplayer and with improved subtitle and codec support would at least be a start in the right direction…
At least add this fix to Exoplayer. That will go a long way to mitigate one of the biggest issues people here have with Exoplayer in its current state.
I think what annoys a lot of people, is that the forums have had threads about this issue for a long time. Google improved it last november, and Plex have had complete radio silence the entire time. An acknowledgement of the issue and perhaps a timeline for a fix would perhaps have made people less grumpy at this point in time.
Just like Plex, we want Plex to be better. The android app is embarrassing at this point. So many of us have put long hours into setting everthing up. If we could improve the android app we would. Be nice to see the sam spirit from the Plex team. This has been a loooooong time.
Hi, I thought I would chime in as well. I like the new video player but it’s just not reliable. A lot of users I’ve given up on that actually submitting the issues and users have resorted to groups like Plex a holic’s to try to get their issues resolved. The player does need some love especially with live TV. I’ve had to resort back to the old player which works a lot better with live TV and for some reason overall has better picture quality. I know you work hard so thank you, but we just want reliability!
That’s not specifically related to ExoPlayer v2. Both the old and new player use the same version of ExoPlayer v2. I’ve personally invested a lot of time investigating issues reported on the forums, and working with our developers to get them resolved. As I’ve mentioned before, the old player will be going away, and we want to ensure we have as few regressions as possible before removing it, so reporting issues that we may not have seen or can’t reproduce trivially is in everyone’s interest. We want reliability and stability too!
@DaveBinM I already have someone else looking into the issue. But I’ll go ahead and post it below just so you can see what’s going on. The 1080i live TV has a Jitter or choppiness to it. Happens a lot less with the old video player but it’s still present on both the new and the old one. I thought it was an issue with the new one but it just happened a couple minutes ago on the old one.
Blockquote This is the issue we’re experiencing I thought the old video player didn’t have the issue but it clearly does and I also thought The 2019 Shield didn’t have the issue but it definitely does LOL. Please look at 50 second mark. Sometimes rewinding helps fix the issue but this time it didn’t. The only way to fix it is to exit the channel and reopen.
Here’s the link to the thread.
Can you point me to the original thread, please?
I’ve been talking to Daioio via private chat on the issue along with a couple of others on Android TV… But the thread is listed about
Yeah, that’s who I’d have referred the issue to. I’ll chat with him internally about it
Oh yeah I know he’s on it. He’s a good guy! He’s going to need another vacation after this.
Couldn’t we all? I could use one myself, but been in lockdown for six weeks, with at least three more to go, so can’t go anywhere!
Oh yeah I know what you’re talkin about. Gives me plenty of time to beta test and help identify these bugs haha.
Please update plex to latest exoplayer and fix the subtitles and other issues so I can relax somewhat and consume my media instead whilst being imprisoned lol
Repeatedly asking, when I’ve already stated that we do periodically update, and that we will be updating, does not make it happen quicker.
No offense, but do you not think 3 plus years is enough time to perfect subtitle support? And exoplayer is now up to 2.8.11
Radio silence and lack of progress gets equally frustrating to your clients as I’m sure the prompting might be to you.
I’m not a developer, so I can’t comment exactly on that, or what complexities are involved with different subtitle formats, containers, and codec support, across a myriad of Android devices.
As for radio silence, I’ve hardly been quiet, and have been upfront that we do periodically update, and will be updating our version of ExoPlayer. I don’t know what more I can personally do or tell you here, that I haven’t already
Please don’t take it personally. It’s not about you and you can only do so much which we all understand. But rather the issues and lack of official Plex input, acknowledgement, timeline and rapid resolution of the issues. Being vague and non committal can only go so far before it starts getting annoying and old for everyone involved.
Plex never gives any public timelines or roadmaps, and is not new. There is always work being done on the player, and most releases you’ll find references to issues fixed relating to the player. It’s just that they might not always be issues you personally experience or find important.
I also don’t see anything non-committal about stating that we do periodically update all our player engines, and telling you that we will update.
Want to see an example of what most people likely want to read at this point?
-We will update to the latest exoplayer 2.8.11 within the next 2 weeks or by X date.
-We acknowledge X SUBTITLE/CODEC issues and we will fix it by X date.
and so on
These are concrete acknowledgements with steps and timelines to resolve an issue.
Not more of ‘soon’, ‘best’, ‘trying’, ‘endeavoring’, ‘will update’, vague open ended kind of statements and keywords that could mean 3 plus years and still not resolved…
