Live tv feed becomes choppy

Every time I`m watching live tv, at some point the video becomes a bit jerky. It looks like the frame rate is droping. If I use the time shift back or foward, it fixes the issue for a 5 to 10 minutes. Pausing does not work, only back or foward.

Its hard to tell exactly when its happening, it kind of sneak up on you. If what you are watching is not moving fast its hard to see but as soon as its start to move a lit bit faster you clearly notice it.Shield TV log.txt (1.9 MB)

Been having the same problem. There’s another threat open on this already. Seems like it has something to do with the new server update. Generally starts happening when it’s on commercials.

World Vision commercial is definitely one that causes it.

Thanks for the info, can you give me the link for this thread plz? I can’t find it. Thanks!

He has it under frame drops.

Hello, rolling back your server one version should help.

I’m sorry not server. Rolling back your Nvidia Shield Plex version. I personally use this older version which seems to be the most reliable they’ve ever made.

Thanks I’ll try this! :grinning:

I’m still having the same issue. What kind of router and motherboard do you have? I’m trying to determine that is its hardware-related and not actually plex related since there’s not too many people that complain about it.

Hi my motherboard is a Asus PZ70 and I recently changed my router to a modem/router its my ISP who gave it to me. I still have the same issue. I noticed that when I watch a channel that is broadcasting in 720p it never gets choppy. I wonder if it’s my computer setup who is in fault. I only have 8GB of Ram. My PMS is installed on a SSD. I Have a Nvidia Geforce 1050 Ti.

Can you confirm the model number of your motherboard again? I can’t find that model. I’m trying to research the ethernet port on it:)

Oh sorry I mad a mistake about the model

Here is my motherboard Asus Z170-P D3 ATX LGA1151 Motherboard

And I had to change the ethernet to a TP-link gigabyte PCI

I justed did a factory reset on my Shield tv to see if it was faulty.

I’ve been watching the channel that was becoming choppy over time, after about 40 min it didn’t bug, I’ll continue doing some test and monitoring. I’ll keep you posted if this fixes the problem. :crossed_fingers:

Okay thanks for the info. I don’t see a direct correlation between my hardware and yours. I have a Msi z490 motherboard which doesn’t have an Intel Lan. I found that this causes issues unrelated to the video. I also have an ASUS ax11000 router. I also confirm that it only happens on 1080p and 1080i. But on 1080i it happens more. It seems to happen when there’s commercials which maybe they’re lower-resolution and cause some kind of issue. Also happens on the new and old video player. Doesn’t happen on my Mi box s which is a Android TV as well. So it’s isolated to Nvidia Shield. Hopefully someone will see if they can address this issue.

Last question what kind of TV do you have? Is it 4K?

Try going under Plex and advanced settings and enable refresh rate switching. Also make sure under the Nvidia Shield settings that you have the recommended setting set for the resolution/refresh rate. Mine was set at 60 hertz I changed it to 59.43 or something like that. So far hasn’t happened anymore. But I just did it an hour ago lol.

Edit 50 hertz seems to work better. I have an LG OLED. Turned off refresh rate switching

Not sure if we are talking about the same thing but I get a weird effect which starts at exactly 5 minutes past the hour like clockwork on one channel that lasts for approximately 2 minutes then it clears up…

This only happens on a single channel (NBC 5 Chicago) and then only at one time at night (10 PM news). Other channels do not appear to exhibit this behavior, even those scheduled to start and end at the same time as NBC 5 Chicago at 10 PM.

Possibly something is processing in the background (I start and stop my recordings 5 minutes before and after the scheduled start and end times to allow for clock times being a little off.

I think that’s different

So it has something to do with refresh rate switching. But enabling that feature doesn’t fix the issue. It might make it happen less but it still happens within a couple hours. Switch to my mibox S and it doesn’t happen but me box as has Auto refresh rate switching built-in. After researching a lot of people were complaining about the Nvidia Shield not having that feature. But it’s never been an issue in the past and doesn’t happen on the hdhomerun app. I going to pick up an Apple TV today and see how it does.

After some test, it did some improvements although it’s not perfect.

It takes more time for the choppy feeling to appear and it doesn’t get as worse then before…
