Improving Plex performance on Asustor NAS

My Plex server is an elderly NAS (ASUSTOR 608T), with all drive bays full. For budget reasons, replacing the NAS with a new Server isn’t an option for at least the next 18-24 months.

It plays everything just fine, as I only stream within the house over wired connections and all the clients used (Chromecast Ultras) can direct-play the format of the material on the NAS. However, I use the Android app to initiate streaming. As the collection has grown, it takes longer and longer to load the metadata. Frequently I stare at spinning orange circle for a while, before it times out and I have to try again.

I want to add an external SSD (connected to either a USB3 port or an eSATA port) to store the Plex metadata, and make the system more responsive.

Plex metadata is currently on /Volume1/Plex/Library

I think I know how to copy this metadata to another location. But I don’t know how to tell Plex to then use the new location for its metadata.

My questions are:

  1. Is moving Plex metadata to an externally connected USB/eSATA SSD on this NAS possible?
  2. Would doing so materially improve load times and responsiveness?
  3. If the answers are yes, how do I move the metadata to a new location and tell Plex to use this?

I would greatly appreciate step by step instructions/guidance on any howto, as I’m not an IT professional.
