Inconsistent performance transcoding 4K source media to 1080p

Hello. I’m a total noob but I’ve been using Plex for a while.

I bought a Nvidia Shield to see if it could handle transcoding my library to 1080p for my bedroom TV.

Mostly I watch stuff on my main TV which has a built in Plex player direct connected to the NAS so there’s no need for that to transcode.

I noticed that some files play absolutely perfectly and some really struggle.

I’m assuming it’s because of the source media format and the shield not supporting hardware transcoding for that particular encoding.

Is that likely to be the problem? What’s the best format to transcode these files to and what’s the best windows program to do this please?

The client doesn’t do the transcoding, the server does. Shield just supports a wider range of media for playback, however if your TV is 1080 and your media is 4k, the Shield will ask the server to convert it.

Hey. Sorry if I wasn’t clear. The shield is the server here.
