Incorrect album release dates

Rescanning won’t likely fix it. It will just look for the existence of the files.

You need to Refresh Metadata, at the Artist level, to bring in the updated data.

If that fails, the Plex Dance should fix it up.

I had done both the Plex Dance, along with lots of refreshing, and 10cc uniformly refused to budge.

So, as I had only set this back up about 3 weeks ago, I uninstalled Plex and deleted all Plex directories on the Nas. I renamed my music library and created a new one with just 10cc in it, reinstalled Plex and set up the library with defaults (except ticking the use of my meta if present). Then did a scan, and… it’s worked…

Good grief, or more precise ‘thank GODley’.

So, no idea. I still have to retag all music to overwrite the release years (thats going to be rather a chore - anything quicker than MP3Tag?), and rescan (going artist by artist this time

Still, I would adore the option to use the ‘original release’ year when present.

WOOT!

I’m not aware of any way to ensure the right data except the good old fashioned manual method, album by album.

I feel your pain. I had to go through my entire library several years ago, album by album, because my embedded metadata was not as good as I thought it was. I didn’t think I would ever get finished, but in hindsight, it was worth the effort.

I prefer Picard, but use MP3Tag occasionally as well. Both can get info from MusicBrainz, to fill and overwrite bad data. I also check the genres and a couple of other tags to make sure they have the ones I want before I send them to Plex.

In the case of Release Dates, I often check Wikipedia and a couple of other sites if the auto-data doesn’t seem right.

Yeah, looks like the manual method.

Lots to do as after YEARS i decided to update an old iTune library (quite extensice) to Plex. So, going through every track as even some of the original purchases are MP3 128 lol, and I want a min on MP3 of 320, and Flac preferable with high bitrate or 24bit.

So, lots to do.

But… as with most of you - am rather OCD and hate seeing the dates or remasters/rereleases instead of the original release. Not sure how that affects looking for tracks by year in Plex (as not investigated much) but certainly other software will be showing wrong.

Still, if a jobs worth doing… etc.

This may or may not be useful at this stage, but this may be why you were having such difficulty:

Your screenshot shows the MusicBrainz Album ID (MUSICBRAINZ_ALBUMID) embedded in your files:

Finding that release on MusicBrainz, that album MBID is indeed the 1993 German release. So your embedded tags were giving Plex conflicting information, with the MBID pointing to the 1993 release, and the Date/Year tags pointing to 1974. I know that Plex uses a weighting system with regard to embedded tags. I would assume that the MBID is pretty heavily weighted, which may be why Plex used the date from that MB entry in preference to the Date/Year tags.

I removed a few to fix some matches, and am doing many manually now. But, on the whole - all is working fine.

I have stopped the link with plex (from Lidarr) so it does not auto-rescan. This gives me time to check all downloaded content and manually edit release date where needed. Still would be nice to use the original release date in Plex, but, at least there is a work around.

Oddly, I often find Lidarr has set the year to 0001? No idea there.
