Incorrect aspect ratio / formatting on some titles

Server Version#:4.62.1
Player Version#:Firestick version 8.21.0.26962

I am having a sporadic issue of certain titles displaying in a incorrect aspect ratio/screen format. When this happens, the picture will be compressed and presented in a 4/3 ratio. I can usually correct it by either exiting plex several times or going into the Display Mode under Playback settings and changing it to Stretch, restarting Plex, then changing it back to letterbox.

I do not believe this is an issue with the source as it only started happening about 4 or 5 months ago. Before then, everything worked fine with the same titles. I am using Firesticks for all of the clients except for occasionally reviewing content on a PC, which I haven’t seen an issue on.

I have uninstalled PMS with no resolution. That being said, I did reuse the data files from the original install. I have also reinstalled the clients on the Firesticks as well as clearing the cache. Does anyone have an idea as to what could be causing the issue?

Are the videos with this issue DVR recordings which have had commercials detected for skip?

There was an issue (don’t know if this was ever fixed) where the commercial detection process could lose container information from the metadata for the video. This would cause the wrong aspect ratio to be used on Fire TV.

Manually re-analysing the video using the Analyse option on the menu in the web player normally fixes it if that is the cause.

No, all of the videos are taken from my DVD collection. I’ve also had someone suggest before that it was related to anamorphic dvds but it has occurred on numerous non-anamorphic dvds.

What are you using to remux the DVDs? I know that some have differing container and video stream aspect ratios, which can be “misread” by some players.

For example: An original 4:3 video padded to 16:9, but stored as 4:3 can come out squished.

Check to make sure the file isn’t reporting two different aspect ratios. If it is, the fix varies by remux tool, but can be done without transcoding.

I use Handbrake. However, I believe that the files are fine. As I mentioned, I did not have any problems with the files until about 4 or 5 months ago. Plus the files play fine in VLC. I am thinking that a Plex update may have caused the issue but I don’t know which one or how to correct it.
