I seem to have made some changes to try and get plex co-habiting with a VPN two days ago. Since then PMS is inaccessible. I’ve reverted all changes and tried a few repairing options to no avail.
Analysis: (all from PMS server)
-VPN installed but not connected.
-http://127.0.0.1:32400/web - doesn’t work
-http://[serverip]:32400/web - doesn’t work
-http://localhost:32400/web - Display secure connection but cant play videos (just a loading screen) and sometimes switched to Indirect connection mode.
-Plex app is in indirect mode and display “The server SERVERNAME is unreachable. Make sure it’s running, double check your network, and try again.”
-Plex app (on same server) connection is unstable and will disconnect randomly.
-Can see server settings in localhost URL.
-Secure connections set as Preferred.
-If the network is off, PMS cant be reached even on localhost URL
What has been tried:
-Sign in and out of server and app
-Did repair with installation
-Worked though these steps
-Win restore (BSOD on every previous restore)
-Host file is clean
-Disabled AV.
Some extra info. When I unticked Enable server support for IPv6 PMS crash on startup with these errors.
ERROR - HttpServer: Error binding acceptor: An attempt was made to access a socket in a way forbidden by its access permissions
ERROR - Error: Unable to set up server: listen: An attempt was made to access a socket in a way forbidden by its access permissions (struct boost::wrapexcept)
That’s got “overly aggressive firewall” or “antivirus with host security” vibes. You mentioned that AV was disabled - do you have 3rd-party AV/malware software installed?
I’ve think I’ve manage to get the cause but weren’t able to find a working solution.
To test run this in elevated cmd. netsh http add iplisten 127.0.0.1
I got an “Access denied” error even though I am admin user.
I ended up doing a clean install Windows install and the above was the first thing I’ve used to test. All is working as expected again and I can get to plex using all URLs.
Thanks to those that help and hope this would assist someone in this really bizarre situation.
A/V software is in many cases still influencing regular operation of your computer even if you “disable” it. Only a clean uninstallation can help.
You’re best advised to look at the support pages of the manufacturer of said A/V software for instructions or maybe even a removal tool.
