Indirect connection for internal access, but external/remote connection direct

Server Version#: Version 4.147.0
Player Version#: Browser Chrome or Mozilla

Remote/External access works with full bandwith.
But internal (within my homenet) access only with indirect connection.

I cannot access mynas http://192.168.0.112:32400/web
goes into timeout.

But synology admin web interface https://192.168.0.112:5001/ works.

Port forwarding at router is set.

Of course browser client and nas are in same subnet 255…

Thank you for your help!

Bought yearly pass, if this is important.

On Synology:

  1. Either turn off the Synology firewall (let your modem/router do that job)

-or-

  1. Open the additional ports:

https://support.plex.tv/articles/201543147-what-network-ports-do-i-need-to-allow-through-my-firewall/

Firewall was already deactivated.

Please next advise!

The service is running as well, but I don’t know if it blocks ports.

I’ve looked at the Synology documentation for this app.

It does not say anything about blocking other ports .
Unfortunately, it doesn’t say that it does not block ports either.

As testing, have you turned it off and retried PMS ?

Dear ChuckPa

Secure Siginin is pre-installed by Synology since DSM7.2 and cannot be deinstalled.

Please check my security settings

Please continue to help me, I’m lost!

Dear ChuckPa

another advise that might help you.

At my Home WLAN:
I use Ipad connected to WLAN. Vodafone Router.
Plex iOS App get full local access and plays movie in BluRay quality.
If I access app.plex.tv by browser chrome at same Ipad, I have the same issue as at my Windows 10 PC or MacBook → indirect connection and 0.7mbps max for video.

And the browser of my ipad cannot load URL myNASip:32400/ only by app.plex.tv.

Crazy… Please help…

Using the info at Plex.tv (your IP address and port)

  1. Attempting to load Plex/web – :x:
  2. Attempting to get any reply from the web server – :x:
  3. Attempting to ping your IP address – :x:

I will send you a PM with what Plex.tv sees.
If this is correct, then something else is blocking.

Do you have Geo-IP region blocking enabled ?
(Plex.tv for you is in Ireland and I am in USA)

No geo blocking
• Attempting to load Plex/web – :x: yes. Both works. Just Indirect connection for internal call
  • Attempting to get any reply from the web server – :x: calling mynasip:32400 does not work via web call.
  • Attempting to ping your IP address –
ping works for mynasip. Also symbology admin port 5001 of mynas works.

Do you know any incidents where router is blocking port locally when port forwardingl from WAN to LAN for 32400 is active?

If all devices are plugged into the back of the router, anything is possible.

Most configurations do the following:

                             +------------------+
                             | ISP modem/router |
                             +--------+---------+
                                      |
                             +------------------+
                             | Switch |
                             +--+----+---+---+--+
                            / | | | | \
                            | | | | | |

Local Devices (PMS, computer, AP, etc)

In this wiring, all local traffic is routed via the switch.
Only internet traffic goes to / from the ISP router.

This is a much faster / more efficient structure

Switches come in all sizes and speeds.
For most cases. Gigabit switches will do the job.
The only decision is to get a switch with enough ports for future growth.

Do you have any colleagues in Germany with Vodafone experience? I can’t be the only one having this issue. Telekom and Vodafone are the biggest ones. Thank you

Are you using any browser add-ons to obscure / hide information from websites? I’ve seen similar reports from users with Safari and the option to hide the device IP enabled. If the connection on from the same device works under other circumstances, it doesn’t appear to be primarily arouter or Syno problem.

I have tried:
Firefox, Chrome and Opera at W11
Chrome and Firefox at iOS 18.5
All indirect at Plex web.

no help anymore? no one has experience with vodafone and plex?

Maybe to summarize, because this has been going back-and-forth…

  • you can access your server while outside your home network using all apps (browser, native)
  • you can access your server from inside your home network using the native apps (e.g. on iOS / iPadOS)
  • you cannot access your server from inside your home network using the web app

If that’s the case, we shouldn’t bother with possible Vodafone issues (certainly no issue with your basic remote access configuration or them blocking your server’s communication in its entirety. The only thing coming to mind is some very, very weird router configuration from ISP side… but that doesn’t really make sense.

For what it’s worth… are you solely relying on the indicator next to Settings > [Server Name], stating the connection is indirect?
From what I remember, that’s not necessarily linked to your remote access status.
Can you check the playback details while streaming from the web app using the server’s “now playing” dashboard? I’d like to know/see if the a stream from your server via a local web app is listed as Local, Remote or Indirect.
Exemplary screenshot from the "now playing" section

Edit:
I’m not sure if you mentioned if you’re experiencing some actual playback issues, or if you just want to troubleshoot why the server settings state this server is Indirect?
