Indirect Connection

Server Version#: 1.41.5.9626
Player Version#: various- a mac, nvidia shield, amazon firestick
Hi, I’m hoping someone can help me for being dumb- I have remote access for plex enabled, it’s working, but everywhere I access it from, it says I have an indirect connection and I cannot for the life of me figure out how to make it a direct connection. This has been going on for months, because I can’t figure it out. I have port forwarding set up to the best of my abilities, I have Verizon Fios and a Fios router. I have manually specific port 32400 on my router. I have no idea where else to go from here. What kinds of other information does anyone need from me in order to make this a direct connection? Thanks so much! Really appreciate it.

Do you also have the Synology firewall active ?

If so, I recommend disabling it (you already have one firewall in your modem/router).

What is displayed in Settings → Remote Access?

Does it say “Fully accessible outside your network”?

Chuck! You probably don’t remember me but I remember you- you helped me some months ago with a Plex issue, I am eternally grateful to you!

So I logged in and checked- no, my synology firewall is not active.

Thank you for your reply!

Hi FordGuy, yes, when I go to Setup - Remote Access, it does in fact say “Fully accessible outside your network.” I’m totally stumped. Any other ideas? Thank you so much!

Thanks for confirming.

Go to canyouseeme.org.

Does the IP address match the public address in settings > remote access?

Enter your server’s public port.

Can it see your server?

Also, put your phone on the mobile network (Wi-Fi off), then point its browser at the public address and port of your server.

http://ip_addr:port/web

Do you see the login page? If yes, try to login.

Good morning FordGuy, I have went to canyouseeme.org, Error: I could not see your service on xxx.xx.xxx.xxx on port (32400)

I removed my IP while posting in here because I didn’t know if it was bad to show that on here. It said the reason was connection is timed out. I just noticed while Plex was open that now it says “not available outside your network,” when I first entered plex and went to remote access it was green and said it was available, which is weird. It changed.

When I try to go to http://ip_addr:port/web it’s pulling up a google page, it’s not giving me a login page.

Thank you so much for your help, I really appreciate it!

Thanks for the info.

The port definitely is not open. The remote connections are using Plex Relay, which is limited to 2 Mbps and appears as an Indirect Connection in the Plex Dashboard.

Do you know if the Verizon router supports UPnP and, if so, is it enabled?

Can you post a screenshot of the port forward statement in the router? Do not mask any of the information.

Can you post a screenshot of Settings → Remote Access as well? Mask the public IP address. Do not mask the port numbers or internal IP addresses.

Hello! Thanks so much for your reply. Yes my router supports UPnP, I checked earlier this morning and the option is there and it is on. If you need a screenshot of that, let me know. I believe I have done what you asked, I look forward to your response, thank you!

Thanks for the screenshots.

The ports do not match.

The port entered in Manually Specify Public Port must match the public port (Original Port) in the port forward statement.

If you want the public port to be 31415, then also enter it in Settings → Remote Access. Then click Retry.

You may need to wait a minute or two to see if it is successful.

Plex initially says “Fully accessible outside your network.” However, that is not really true. Plex is only trying to enable remote access. If it fails, then it will change back to “Not available..” If it succeeds, then it stays at “Fully accessible…”

I understand now, and I am an idiot. I’m sorry, ChuckPa helped me set up that port forwarding months ago, and then I tried to do the manual port forwarding in Plex myself. That’s why the numbers did not match. Thank you so much for your help, I truly appreciate it!!
