Indirect connection on web player on local network

Server Version#: 1.18.3.2156
Player Version#: 4.12.3

I know this issue has been posted many times but I’ve tried everything in so many posts across the internet and really can’t solve it. I’ve had this issue for a couple of months.

The issue seems to only be on the web player when I’m on my home network. On the mobile app and tv app across all devices on my network are absolutely fine. It also happens on my PC which is running the PMS when accessed through the web player but not when opening from the icon in the Hotbar.

Edit:
I’ve tried changing DNS to 8.8.8.8 and 1.1.1.1
Port forwarding on my router (Shouldn’t matter anyway)
Allowing plex exe(s) and ports through windows firewall on both the server and client machines

Which browser?
Which version of Windows?

Using chrome as client and Windows 10 on both client and PMS

Do you have any addons installed on Chrome? Can start Chrome in safe mode?

Nothing changed from default. Should also add that I’ve tried on MS Edge.

I have LastPass, Windscribe, Honey and Pintrest. Nothing I didn’t have before the issue arose.
Using Incognito doesn’t made a difference so it’s not a caching issue in chrome.

I wonder if it’s a DNS issue
or
DNS rebinding protection

  1. set the DNS server to the one provided by Google (in your router) (8.8.8.8 and/or 8.8.4.4)
  2. disable DNS rebinding protection for the domain plex.direct (also in the settings of your router)

I can’t change the DNS server used direcly on my router. For some reason when I change this it screws up my router, even after I reboot so it can connect again forcing me to factory reset my router. I looked online about this a my ISP provided router (which I am using unforchanly) doesn’t allow it. The best I can do is change DNS on my machines manually which I have done since day 1 when I changed ISP.

I have an option called Demilitarized zone (DMZ) which according to the manual disables DNS rebinding in some way and allows just about everything to that machine over the internet (yeah I know, not secure in anyway but I don’t have much of a choice to get remote access working and my FTP server).

Sorry for it being very long winded.

So you’re computer is using the alternate DNS, correct?

I wonder if you would have better luck use Plex Media Player on your computer rather than the web client?

You can download it from here: Plex Media Player - #92 by pcalves

Otherwise, I’m out of ideas :frowning: Maybe someone else will be able to chime in…

Yeah, correct.

I will install that. I know that works nicely for me. I just prefer using the web client being that’s how I connect normally while sitting at my desk but yeah, I will use that.

I know this is a bit of a weird one. Just so random and literally no idea why it’s doing it.

Thank for your help though!!!

Just to close this. The issue lies in my hub. I can’t seem to get a direct connection sitewide due to something my ISP is blocking in my hub when I change DNS Server. I tested my server on a family member’s network and it seems to work perfectly.

As a solution, while not perfect, I have used a wired connection on clients into the switch I used for my PMS to bypass the hub entirely.

If anyone else experiences this issue try changing the DNS Server your ISP using by default and if that doesn’t work your best bet is to go onto you PMS and all clients and change your DNS Server manually to something like 1.1.1.1 (Cloudflare) or 8.8.8.8 (Google) as these are the best services that I can find and are very responsive.

Thanks, @darcilicious for your help and directing me to the possible issue. I really appreciate it.

And everyone else, if you live in the UK, don’t use TalkTalk’s supplied hub!!!
