Indirect play on Plex Windows App behind pfsense

Server Version#: 1.28.2.6106
Player Version#: 1.52.1.3195-a0c4d5e9

Hello,

I don’t know how to fix this issue. I’ve googled and googled and I can’t seem to find a proper solution.

I have four interfaces on my pfsense machine each with it’s own different LAN IP.

Plex server is running on the MEDIA interface and I’m using Plex for Windows on the PC interface.

Plex remote connection works just fine, it’s all accesible and direct. I’ve done what plex documentation says for pfsense and added this to the dns resolver settings

Plex said to add just the plex.direct one but I tried all their domains. Not even sure if the syntax is right.

This solved the indirect issue when accesing from the web directly on the server ip but not the other types of clients. I’m also suspecting the apple tv client has the same issue as the windows app because it’s sluggish and it’s on the WIFI interface.

I’ve also setup plex to treat these other interface ips as local network

Has anyone ran into this before and has any ideas on how to solve it?

Thank you.

Only declare plex.direct as private domain.

Remove the space characters after the commas, or the whole content of the input field “LAN networks” will be ignored.

You will need to establish routing between the subnets of your home network.
Plex clients will try first to contact the IP of the server that is marked as “local”. Which means that you need to establish routes which allow direct access from the subnet(s) where your clients reside, to the subnet where your server sits.

Unfortunately I cannot tell you how, that is something I’d rather not touch.

For some reason, what ended up helping was actually choosing the network adapter from the plex settings instead of having selected the “Any” options.
