It would be awesome if we could set our tv shows and movies to direct play while our home video are transcoded. The reason: Samsung TV officially support HEVC 4k@60fps but wont play them without hick-ups. If i trancode them they play fine.
So the request would be to either select the transcoding settings for each library OR
set the transcoding for special formats (could be difficult)
I spend a great deal of time manually re-encoding video files that are mostly in MKV format to MP4 when the files are either unmanageably large to stream or the transcoder repeatedly crashes during playback. Re-encoding always fixes them and shrinks them to manageable sizes. It would be nice to have a feature that would do a background encoding of video files to force them to comply with size and encoding standards. The FFmpeg utility is freeware and gets incorporated into many projects.
follow-up seems to be off-topic, but you can already add your entire library to be optimized; there’s an existing suggestion discussing an option for Plex to keep only the optimized version → [Feature Request] Keep the optimized movie version only
