The windows app won’t help you. And it is outdated and requires a Plex Pass for activation. Don’t use it.
ok. one last question (hopefully), the instructions say to install plex on the machine that is storing your movies. why do they say that if you can install it on any machine?
That sentence contradicts itself.
Which instructions are you referring to?
it says it twice on this site: https://www.plex.tv/en-ca/your-media/
it says:
“The Plex Media Server (PMS) is our free software that makes the magic happen behind the scenes. Once downloaded to where you store your personal files (usually a computer or NAS device), it automatically makes all your content look beautiful and organised in your Plex library, available in any Plex app. Get ready to stream!”
" Download the Plex Media Server on the device where you store your media."
These instructions are meant for first-time users.
The added complexity of separating file storage and media server was deemed too much for beginners, so they are steered away from it.
ok thanks guys for all your help.
Hey Otto, I did the Scan Library Files for the Movie library, but all it did was remove the red trash can for one movie. If I Scan Library Files again, it does nothing. Any idea what to do?
Inspect the Plex media info
https://support.plex.tv/articles/201998867-investigate-media-information-and-formats/
of the affected items.
You should see where Plex is expecting the file to find. (Drive letter, folder and/or file name). Verify that the file is still available under these.
that’s weird, the path wasn’t even there anymore. it was at one point. so I added it again and rescanned and now everything is fine. thanks again for your help.
Otto, I realized there is a lot of buffering when I play a movie through Plex, even though the movie is local to my network. but when I play the same movie on Kodi, there is no buffering. do you know why?
Which client type are you using?
Still the web app?
Please post the media info of an example video.

You are trying to play a video with HEVC codec and AC3 audio in a web browser.
Web browsers don’t support either, which then triggers transcoding in the server during playback. But since the HEVC codec requires a shedload of CPU power to decode, this doesn’t happen fast enough. Thus the stuttering.
Download the Plex Media Player from below and use it instead.

cool. i’ll try that, thanks
I installed it. using this the video doesn’t buffer, but its choppy. it must have something to do with the player because its fine if I use kodi or Media Player Classic.
