Is there a way to run plex server software on a computer and have it access/support a NAS based Plex server? The drive mapping would be different, which is why I had a problem just copying the files from the one device to another. It said all the shows were missing, even after I fixed the drive mapping. The nas has an underpowered CPU, while the windows computer has a Core I9 and an nvidia 4080.
Plex supports having multiple servers on a single account.
The two Plex servers are independent of each other, even if they are accessing the same media files.
Mount the NAS shares to your Windows system (Map Network Drive). The username/password used to access the NAS must have at least read only rights to the media files.
Then install Plex Media Server on the Windows system, claim the server, and create libraries.
You can leave Plex Media Server running on the WD or not. Up to you.
I think you have misunderstood. What I want to do is have the PLEX server in windows using the same configuration files/descriptions/information as on the nas. I tried to copy the plexmedia files over, but they all showed the wrong directories for the movies and tv shows, since the nas sees tham as a direct drive, and windows maps them as a drive letter.
What I am trying to accomplish is have the windows server utilize the same config/info files as the NAS plex is using. I am not talking about the movie and tv show files, i am talking operational plex server files.
As I mentioned, the two servers are independent of each other.
You can copy the Plex Data Folder from the NAS to the PC and have things synchronized at that point in time.
However, going forward data will not be synchronized between the servers. Any configuration change, metadata edits, etc. made on one server will not synchronize with the other server. You’ll have to make the changes on both servers.
See Move an Install to Another System Skip the “Copy Additional Server Settings…” section.
I don’t WANT them to be independent, I want to use the windows computer as the plex server without having to have it scan ALL of my movies and tv shows all over. I am trying to set it up , and then somehow get the information from the current plex server to it.
I TRIED copying the plex server files from the NAS to windows but it has the wrong drive mapping, and I cannot find a way to have it correct the drive mapping. I am hoping there is a way to setup a second plex server and have it import the information from the other plex server, but in such a way that the drive mapping is correct.
@darknesscomes I think there is a bit of confusion here. I am going to assume that you have a NAS and are trying to replace it with a Windows PC. As @FordGuy61 linked https://support.plex.tv/articles/201370363-move-an-install-to-another-system/ the instructions fro MOVING the server to windows. It wont be a 1:1 since you are moving from a unix based platform to windows, but as long as you disable automatically emptying the trash between scans, you can move the server. Once the server is moved you add in the correct file paths to the new locations, then scan the movies (this is required to identify the new folder locations) but it wont do a full analysis of the files, it will see that the files already exist at the NAS location and then it will add a new “duplicate” file to that same movie/TV episode. Once all your media has been re-indexed at the new location, edit your library to remove the old paths, and you can empty the trash and all of the old NAS paths will be removed
You are correct, that’s what I am trying to do, but here’s the issue. I copied all the plex media files, I put them in the correct place, I started the plex server on the PC, and even AFTER I put in all the correct paths, and told it to scan, then deleted the old incorrect paths, it still shows all media as not available. For some reason, it will not re-orient the filenames to the correct paths.
you need to follow those steps specifically.
- Copy the files to the new server
- add the new paths
- scan your files.
A this point you should be able to pull a movie/episode up, select get info, and then see 2 files associated with the movie.
If that last step was successful:
- Empty your trash
- Remove the library paths that point to the old NAS locations
- Empty the trash again
- Optimize the database
- Profit
Trying it now, re-copying files so everything is up to date. Will know in a couple of hours and will let you know. Thank you!
This appears to be working, though it is rescanning all 60tb of files and redoing all the intros and credits. I was hoping to save time and not have it do that, but oh well. I guess it will be finished in another day or two or three. I appreciate all the help.
