Instant View

Sure would be nice if I could send a link to friends and family members to view a home video of my kids that I don't want to publicly share on the web, ala YouTube, without having to set them up on PLEX. What do you think?

Would not a shared folder on Dropbox or some such be easier? You could just copy the file to the folder and they could either play it from there or download it.

I think the free Dropbox allows enough space for at least a video or three.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately it won't fit on the free version of dropbox with everything else I have in there and besides the point is not to host it through a third party internet service. I could buy more storage but why can't I do this for free though PLEX and my PLEX pass account?

You can but they'd need an account to view it. They could easily go through plex.tv to get to the image though so long as your server sharing is set up.

You don’t need an account to view a link someone sends from YouTube for example.

No and you also wouldn't need an account if you setup a apache2/nginx host and hosted the videos from there. Plex is secured with accounts and I personally can't see the need for publicly sharing a video like that, but then again I don't often share videos with people unless already on Youtube, If I did I'd probably just set them Plex up or an Account to access it.

It would be a nice feature to have don't get me wrong, maybe more people will support it and grab the Plex teams attention.

OK, how about something like this...

PLEX allows for sharing. User accounts was a big step forward in the latest release and accomplished 99% of what I wanted. In addition I would like to be able to send a web link to another registered PLEX user without sharing a whole library. Just one specific video. Maybe even time limited. So someone who I don't want sharing my video library but be able to view a specific title for perhaps a limited amount of time. What do you think of this compromise?

It could be easier maybe with owncloud? Im sure you have the same type of features as dropbox however hosted from home.

I actually have a Sonology NAS with 4TB of cloud storage but no transcoding would be provided. Along with most all home storage solutions.

Its a good and useful idea. Get a public link to a specific piece of content or content group (i.e. a single family video, the pictures from my last vacation or all family videos that match a certain filter, just like sync works in that respect). Allow a link decay time to be set (i.e. share for 7 days) or a number of views.

Wayflix, flesh out your first post so people get a better idea of what you are after exactly (no upload to cloud storage required, no accounts required because you can't ask your grandparents to make an account, etc.), just so its all in one place and people don't have to read through the whole thread to decide if they want to vote on it or not.

Maybe this could be implemented through the cloud option already available to us? If not it's a possible work around until it does.

Sync your video to the cloud, and then download it from there. Share the cloud link with a friend.

Bear in mind I'm making an assumption that the cloud service uploads the video as a readable file, and that it's not in some special "locked" area of your cloud storage.

I've just tested this with the Cloud Sync option I mentioned above. Works fine and I can share a public link from GoogleDrive to a friend. Easy!

That’s not very efficient. No different than uploading it to the cloud and sending a link from there. Having a share link from PLEX would be better and less steps.

And I don’t have enough cloud storage to host a large file. Plus you have no on the fly transcoding.

Well it's more efficient than anything else, still within the Plex interface as well.  I'm not meaning to replace the feature your wanting, but it's an adequate work around. From what I understand as well it's converted before it goes onto the Drive, with Google I just got a Youtube Player and nobody has needed to transcode anything.
